Bookish News: September/October 2019 Sci-Fi Fantasy Book Releases to Get Excited About

Oh boy, the titles for the later months in the year are really a mouthful lol. Anyway, I can’t believe there are only four months left in the year. But there are still a lot of great books to look forward to! Especially in September and October, for some reason. So here are some of the books that I’m excited for that you all should be too!

Lord of the Last Heartbeat by May Peterson // Sep 2

Lord of the Last Heartbeat by May PetersonBlurb:

Stop me. Please.

Three words scrawled in bloodred wine. A note furtively passed into the hand of a handsome stranger. Only death can free Mio from his mother’s political schemes. He’s put his trust in the enigmatic Rhodry—an immortal moon soul with the power of the bear spirit—to put an end to it all.

But Rhodry cannot bring himself to kill Mio, whose spellbinding voice has the power to expose secrets from the darkest recesses of the heart and mind. Nor can he deny his attraction to the fair young sorcerer. So he spirits Mio away to his home, the only place he can keep him safe—if the curse that besieges the estate doesn’t destroy them both first.

In a world teeming with mages, ghosts and dark secrets, love blooms between the unlikely pair. But if they are to be strong enough to overcome the evil that draws ever nearer, Mio and Rhodry must first accept a happiness neither ever expected to find.

One-click with confidence. This title is part of the Carina Press Romance Promise: all the romance you’re looking for with an HEA/HFN. It’s a promise!

My Thoughts:

This one sounds so interesting, what with the immortal moon soul bear spirit and the darkly magical voice and the romance!

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir // Sep 10

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn MuirBlurb:

The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.

My Thoughts:

LGBT+ rep, necromancy, and a main character who sounds like she’s gonna be a lot of fun to read about. What’s not to look forward to?!

A Crown of Iron & Silver by Hailey Turner // Sep 10

Soulbound #3 by Hailey TurnerBlurb:

Never promise a life that isn’t yours to give.

New York City is decked out for the holidays, and Special Agent Patrick Collins is looking forward to a reunion with his old team when he gets assigned a new case. A human child is missing, and the changeling left in her place causes a prominent witch family to demand justice from the fae.

Meanwhile, continued harassment from the New York City god pack forces Jonothon de Vere to formally establish his own with Patrick. Doing so will mean a civil war within the werecreature community—a war they risk losing from the start without alliances. Making bargains with the fae is never wise, but Patrick and Jono have nothing to lose when a fae lord comes asking for their help.

The Summer Lady has been kidnapped from the Seelie Court, and if they can find her, Patrick and Jono will cement an alliance with the fae. But the clues to her disappearance are found in Tír na nÓg, and the Otherworld has never been kind to mortals.

Venturing past the veil, Patrick and Jono risk losing territory, time, and their very lives while searching for answers. Because the Queen of Air and Darkness knows they are coming—and the ruler of the Unseelie Court has an offer for them they can’t possibly refuse.

My Thoughts:

This is the third book in a M/M urban fantasy I started earlier this year, and it sounds like it’s going to be another amazing and action-packed book about these imperfect but lovable characters!

The Legend of Diablo by V.S. McGrath // Sep 17

The Legend of Diablo by V.S. McGrathBlurb:

Hell’s not so scary when you’ve been there twice already…

It’s been three years since she lost her sister, Abby, to the Division, and Hettie Alabama has gone rogue. Roaming the West with an outlaw posse, robbing banks and stealing magic, she’s broken every rule she once believed in. Nothing matters anymore but finding Abby.

Meanwhile, the world is on fire. Hungry for power, the Division leaches magic from the vulnerable, with dire consequences that set Hettie’s pursuit of her sister on a collision course with dangerous monsters and even more dangerous men. It’s up to Hettie and her cursed revolver, Diablo, to find a way to save the world—or end it.

The Legend of Diablo delivers an action-packed conclusion to the Devil’s Revolver series steeped in violent history, dark magic, and hope that demands an accounting.

My Thoughts:

I’ve enjoyed all the books in this fantasy western series so far, and I can’t wait to read the final one!

The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giesbrecht // Sep 24

The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer GiesbrechtBlurb:

Debut author Jennifer Giesbrecht paints a darkly compelling fantasy of revenge in The Monster of Elendhaven, a dark fantasy about murder, a monster, and the magician who loves both.

The city of Elendhaven sulks on the edge of the ocean. Wracked by plague, abandoned by the South, stripped of industry and left to die. But not everything dies so easily. A thing without a name stalks the city, a thing shaped like a man, with a dark heart and long pale fingers yearning to wrap around throats. A monster who cannot die. His frail master sends him out on errands, twisting him with magic, crafting a plan too cruel to name, while the monster’s heart grows fonder and colder and more cunning.

These monsters of Elendhaven will have their revenge on everyone who wronged the city, even if they have to burn the world to do it.

My Thoughts:

This just sounds really unique and interesting with the whole murderous monster romance thing!

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell // Sep 25

Wayward Son by Rainbow RowellBlurb:

Simon Snow is back and he’s coming to America!

The story is supposed to be over.

Simon Snow did everything he was supposed to do. He beat the villain. He won the war. He even fell in love. Now comes the good part, right? Now comes the happily ever after…

So why can’t Simon Snow get off the couch?

What he needs, according to his best friend, is a change of scenery. He just needs to see himself in a new light.

That’s how Simon and Penny and Baz end up in a vintage convertible, tearing across the American West. They find trouble, of course. (Dragons, vampires, skunk-headed things with shotguns.) And they get lost. They get so lost, they start to wonder whether they ever knew where they were headed in the first place.

With Wayward Son, Rainbow Rowell has written a book for everyone who ever wondered what happened to the Chosen One after he saved the day. And a book for everyone who was ever more curious about the second kiss than the first. It’s another helping of sour cherry scones with an absolutely decadent amount of butter.

Come on, Simon Snow. Your hero’s journey might be over – but your life has just begun.

My Thoughts:

I just recently read Carry On (late to the party, I know), and I loved it! The characters were so lovable, and I’m super excited to get back to them with this sequel.

Gideon the Ninth looks very good to me. But I have say that the cover for The Legend of Diablo steals the show for me. I absolutely love the expression on her face, and I am so here for women owning it on their covers. I am very excited for Rebel by Marie Lu 😀

  2. Brittany

What? You don’t have Darkdawn or The Girl The Sea Gave Back?!?! 😂 This might be the first list of upcoming releases I have seen that didn’t include one or both of those 😂

  3. Greg

Some pretty good looking stuff coming out. Lord of the Last Heartbeat sounds pretty good.

The Mojnster of Elenhaven looks promising too!

  4. Becky @ A Fool's Ingenuity

I#m feeling so impressed with myself as I usually look at your release posts and think ‘I know none of these books’ and then feel out of the loop for good releases but I’ve got two of these on my radar. Yes to Wayward Son and Gideon the Ninth, I am so hoping my library gets Gideon the Ninth in as I read about it and it sounded awesome. I saw an article that said it was totally inspired by Japanese RPG games like Final Fantasy and I couldn’t not want to read after that kind of comparison? I thought I was the only person excited about this release!

Autumn gets me excited for long winter evenings and lots of cosy reading time! The Monster of Elendhaven has me intrigued. Will keep a lookout for this one and look forward to your review. Do you already have copies of all these?

SO MANY BOOKS TO READ SO LITTLE TIME! My most recent read *and glowing recommendation to you is* “Two Skies Before Night” by Robert Gryn. As a long time fan of science fiction and alternate universe narratives I was really excited about the prospect of this book because it promised a brave step into the murder mystery/noir thriller realm, and it totally delivered! It honors what I love about science fiction but adds in a very real-life crime element that keeps the storyline running. The city is divided into the very rich who live in the “Above” and the poor who live in the “Below.” When a double murder involves a man from the above and a woman from the below Detective Lang knows he has a tricky case ahead of him. I hope he has more planned and encourage SF fans to check it out. Here is his website – http://www.robertgrynbooks.com/
If you do end up checking it out I would love to know what you think
