The Weekly Update: 3/27/16

I'm back to being computer-less since I no longer have the computer I was using temporarily :-/ But I'm crossing my fingers that I'll get mine back soon and that it will actually be fixed. (And don't worry, posts are already scheduled for this week!)

As for my Kindle, it has now decided it's not going to open 90% of the books I have from Amazon because they're DRM protected. Even though I own them. -_- They still work on my phone app, but I have a Kindle for a reason! I'm going to try a factory reset, but I need to save some things first.

I think I need to draw a pentagram and do some sort of seance or spell with all my electronics in the middle in order to banish all the curse magic that is surely in them. Come to think of it, every phone I've ever had has had issues with texting, and my TV remote channel buttons don't even work (I even got a replacement remote, but it wouldn't work either). Those are going in the pentagram too.

In non-electronics news, I think I've been reading too many thought-provoking books about the afterlife lately because I had a dream very similar to Hereafter, which I just reviewed, in which I got in a car crash and died, but I didn't remember the crash. I just "woke up" as a ghost, and some people could see me but others couldn't. Anyway, the whole thing was very unsettling because I was reading the things my friends were posting about me on Facebook, and I was sad that I was dead but also confused and disappointed because I wanted to move on, not be a ghost and stick around forever... It was strange.

And that about sums it up for real life news!

Blog/Bookish Updates:

I ended up getting four more review copies last week, but I read three, so I’m doing alright in that regard. But I’ve created a crazy tight post schedule because I still have lots of reviews that need to get posted by certain dates. So I’m all booked up until mid-May lol. I’m thinking I might start posting three reviews on weeks I don’t do TTT, just to make sure everything gets posted on time.

Books I Received for Review:

How to Date Dead Guys by Ann M. Noser | reading, books
How to Ditch Dead Guys by Ann M. Noser | reading, books
The Other Side of Gravity by Shelly Crane | books, reading, book covers
Dark Blood by Caleb James

Books I Finished:

How to Date Dead Guys by Ann M. Noser | reading, books
How to Ditch Dead Guys by Ann M. Noser | reading, books
Eerie by C.M. McCoy | books, reading, book covers

I requested How to Date Dead Guys from Netgalley, but then it went on sale and I got impatient and bought it because it’s actually a book I’ve wanted for a while lol. It ended up surprising me in a great way with how much it affected me, and I can’t wait to post my review this week! The second book also completely sucked me in, and now I hate that I have to wait for Book 3! Eerie was an entertaining, quirky read, but there were a couple kind of odd things about it that I’ll explain in my full review.

Song of the Week:

No song this week. No computer, no music listening for me.

In Case You Missed It:

Cover Characteristics: Book Covers featuring Kissing
Discussion: The Good Thing About Bad Books
Book Review: Princess of Tyrone (The Fairytale Galaxy Chronicles Book 1) by Katie Hamstead

I told you to try the pentagram ! Works as well for breaking curses as it does to scare annoying neighbors! 🙂
GOOD GIRL for thinking about us your fans and scheduling all those posts 🙂
Now seriously talking… Sorry about your electronic curse hope everything goes back to normal soon.
Hummmm and let’s rethink the whole pentagram approach… Going wiccan may make those nightmares worse

Don’t worry, How to Date a Dead Guys is what gave me the pentagram idea, but then How to Ditch Dead Guys made me decide it would be a terrible idea after reading about all the consequences of her witchcraft lol. But your mention of pentagrams the other week also contributed to this idea 😛 I really am starting to feel like this electronics thing is beyond coincidence though.

Hahaha, I’m glad I made one person happy by scheduling those posts. I just, GAH, hate to not post! And I’m all crazy perfectionist, so I gotta have the graphics!

Thanks, it’s taking way too long! I looked up the update, and it turns out my kindle is one of the types that doesn’t need it. But thanks for pointing it out! Happy Easter to you too, even though I’m a little late 🙂

  2. Anna @ Adventures with a Book Nerd

Oh no! I absolutely hate when my laptop stops working. Last July my laptop charger broke, and I felt so bad because my actual laptop worked, but I didn’t have a charger! Luckily one of my friends had a charger that was compatible with my laptop that she let me use to keep up on my blog. I hope that you get your laptop back soon! I heard on the radio a couple days ago that you had to update your Kindle by a certain date or else it wouldn’t work anymore. I don’t know if that will help fix you problems, but it’s worth a try. *Just looked it up, and the date has already passed.* I hope that you get all of your books read in time!

It’s the worst! It’s been weeks without my laptop now :-/ I checked the update thing though, and it turns out my kindle is one of the kinds that doesn’t need it. But thanks for pointing that out 🙂 With my luck, if my kindle had needed it, I would have missed it lol.

Did you plug your Kindle into the computer you were using temporarily? I’ve had that problem before with EPUBs; I plugged my e-reader into my Mom’s computer when I visited her and it then refused to open all the library books I’d downloaded to MY computer, because HER computer had a different Adobe Digital Editions account on it, which did not have those books on it. If so, I’m not really sure what you can do to fix it until you get your machine back, unless you have access to another computer you can download the books to (I’m afraid I don’t know much about Kindles; I use a Kobo as I mostly use my e-reader for library books and only EPUBs are available).

    1. Kristen Burns

Nope, I didn’t plug the kindle in, so that can’t be it. I’m just gonna try the factory reset since I’m not exactly a kindle expert either, despite the fact that I own one. So I have no clue what happened, as usual -_-

  4. Samantha

So sorry about your tech issues! I know how maddening it can be! I can’t wait to see what you think of the new Shelly Crane book. I loved Significant!

  5. Lola

I hope you’ll get your own computer back soon and that it will be fixed! I hope you can fix your kindle with the factory reset. I also had to do a reset once with my kobo when it was acting up last year, but since then it works great. It really sounds like your electronics are cursed.

That sounds like a creepy dream! Dying in a dream is always such a weird experience. I guess that book left quite the impact on you if you dreamed about it. I usually remember my dreams the morning, but forget them later on in the day or week. I used to keep a dream dairy when I was younger and have always been interested in dreams.

I am looking forward to read your review of How to Date Death Guys it sounds like a good one! Have a great week and I hope your tech problems will be fixed soon!

    1. Kristen Burns

I feel like this computer thing is taking forever. Honestly it’s making me feel really stressed out because I’m getting behind on everything. And I actually need my computer back before I can even try the factory reset. Luckily my review copies will still open since those are the ones I’m focused on now anyway.

Apparently the book did leave an impact on me! But the Dead Guys books were also about people coming back from the dead with unfinished business and whatnot, so that kind of stuff was still on my mind even though my dream resembled the other book a lot more. And yes, dying in dreams is a weird thing.

Thanks! You have a great week too 🙂

  6. Greg

That’s quite the dream- yeah that would freak you out. Must have been a good book?? lol maybe you need to read something to balance that out. 🙂 Dreams are so weird, I tend to forget mine but it’s amazing what the mind does w/ stuff. 😛

Man what’s going on with your electronics lol? You got some bad mojo going on with those. Hope your computer gets back quick… nice picks on book The Other Side of Gravity cover caught my eye. And the Dead Guys books- those titles crack me up.

    1. Kristen Burns

Haha yeah, that book and then the two Dead Guys books, all about people dying and coming back and whatnot. I did read Eerie in between which was quirky and whatnot, but apparently that didn’t help lol. But yeah, Hereafter was very thought-provoking, so I guess it was still in my head. It IS amazing what the mind can do on its own in dreams though!

It’s a curse I tell you. I have no other explanation. It’s funny though, I even mention in my review for Dead Guys that I didn’t believe the other reviews about the depth of the book because with a title like that it had to just be fun and funny! But they were both great.

  7. Annika @ Hiding in Books

    Sounds like a scary dream!!
And I’ll totally join you in the witching – a pentagram/seance/spell sounds like it’s needed! I can’t deal with anything electronic, so I’ll stand with you on this one 🙂
Can’t wait for your review of How to Date Dead Guys – I haven’t heard of it, but I’m super curious now!

    1. Kristen Burns

I would totally invite you over to try it with me if you lived here! Lol I swear I’m convinced it must be some sort of curse or something. This just cannot be coincidence!

You should definitely check out my review this week! It was such a great book and really surprising because it’s not quite what I expected from the title.

  8. Heather @ Random Redheaded Ramblings

Electronics are just not built to last! My kindle keeps saying it is charging when it quite obviously isn’t, it is beyond me and I don’t want to reset it as it never makes much difference,, I think I would rather either go all out and buy and iPad or go and buy a Kindle Paperwhite or whatever they are called, the ones that have a charge that last for months! Anyway good luck, I hope you get sorted out.

I have seen the “Dead Guys” books on a few blogs today, I am curious and may check out!

    Have a good week!

    1. Kristen Burns

Yeah, yours doesn’t sound like the kind of thing a reset can fix. But this book thing seems more like an OS problem, so fingers crossed that it’ll work.

You should definitely check the book out! It was really great and not what I was expecting. You have a great week too!

  9. Karen Blue

I had a similar problem with kindle books being DMR protected. I had to go to my documents (on the kindle) and open all of them from there before I could view them anywhere else. (I just got a new Kindle and I figured that was why it was wonky for me). Anyways, sorry to hear you are having an issue. I hope you get it sorted soon.
I am really impressed to see you getting books and the reading them in the same week. That is such a simple concept, but I am so far behind of my TBRs.
    Have a great week!

    1. Kristen Burns

Oh goodness, I have way too many ebooks to open them all individually. I’ll call that Plan B lol.

If it makes you feel any better, I do still have books from weeks ago that I haven’t read, so I don’t always read books the week I get them. But I am actually pretty good about getting review copies read quickly because I get stressed about them otherwise. You have a great week too, and good luck on catching up on that TBR!

  10. Charlie @ Girl of 1000 Wonders

I’ve had a bad bought with electronics lately, too. My laptop died two weeks ago. There was no coming back, so I just took the plunge and bought a newer, nicer model. My phone has also been on the fritz for the last several months, so I went Friday and got the latest model. I am still learning the ropes, but I’m liking it!

    1. Kristen Burns

My computer’s not even a year old, so I’d really rather not have to get a new one yet. Same for my kindle :-/ I’m glad your new electronics are working well though 🙂 New phones always take a bit of time to get used to!

  11. Maureen's Books (@MaureenHinten)

I think a pentagram will probably be helpful!! I mean.. it’s definitely a curse by the sound of it and pentagrams always help with those!! 😉 LOL!!

I love those ‘How to..’ covers. I haven’t read them but they look so pretty I really want to start reading them.

I hope your computer will be back soon. Have a great week 😉

    1. Kristen Burns

I really think there must be a curse of something lol. This is too much to be coincidence! You should definitely check out the Dead Guys books though! They were great.

Thanks, I would love to have my computer back already! You have a great week too 🙂

  12. Tiffany

You never realize how dependent you are on technology until it fails you. Maybe you need to sprinkle holy water on your electronics instead. Something weird is going on with them.

    1. Kristen Burns

Seriously, I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t at least have my kindle! I don’t know that adding water to my electronics is the best solution though, haha. Maybe adorning them with some crosses? I’m getting desperate lol.

  13. Bookworm Brandee

I’m so sorry you’re not having the best of luck with electronics, Kristen. :/ Hopefully the pentagrams will do the trick. 😉 That dream about Hereafter…that’s some weird stuff. OH and I think I want to read the Noser books…can’t wait to see what you thought.
Hope your week has been grand thus far! 😀

    1. Kristen Burns

My week has not been very grand at all, but thank you lol. The dream was so strange! But it was also kind of thought-provoking. And you should definitely read the Dead Guys books! I feel like you would like them, they seem like your type of books 🙂
