Updates & Info: The Weekly Update (13)

So this is completely random, but you know that thing where you hear about or see something for the first time, and suddenly it starts popping up everywhere? And usually it's a song or a book or something relatively normal, right?

For me it's half-woman/half-spider creatures.

You wouldn't think it would be that common, but I have recently come across it in a book, a graphic novel, and a TV show. (Real life better not be next.)

So I looked it up! They're called arachne. And that thing that happens? I looked that up too. It's called the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon.

Now you can say you learned something new today! You're welcome.

Also, I have no real news this week, so my story about arachne is pretty much all you're getting.

Bookish News:

This isn’t really news, but did you know you can borrow ebooks, graphic novels, audiobooks, and even movies online with a library card?!?!?! Because I did not. But I do now, and I plan to use it to its fullest! (I suppose this may not be true of everywhere, but you should check and find out!)

Books I Finished:

Winterspell by Claire Legrand | books, reading, book covers
Saga Vol. 5 by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples | books, reading, book covers

I hit a bit of a slump this week, wasn’t really sure what I felt like reading. Even though the plot dragged some, I thought Winterspell was a unique Nutcracker retelling that used the elements of the original in a really creative way, and what better time for a Nutcracker retelling than December?! And of course Saga was great.

Song of the Week:

White Winter Hymnal Cover by Pentatonix – Apparently I’m in a very Pentatonix mood this Christmas? Anyway, this song is kind of morbid to really be considered a Christmas song, but it’s sure nice to listen to!

In Case You Missed It:

Cover Characteristics: Book Covers featuring Sharks
Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Male Characters from Books I’ve Read This Year
Book Review: House of Pawns (House of Royals Book 2) by Keary Taylor
Graphic Novel Review: Saga Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples

I truly need to read Saga! My friend used the art for his wedding invitations – so cute!

How did you like Winterspell? I don’t think I got more than 50 pages in, I couldn’t get the hang of it.

Saga is crazy but so much fun! I’d say 3 stars for Winterspell. There were things I disliked and things that confused me, but there were also a lot of things I liked about it. It was very pro-feminism, I thought it was really creative, and I liked Clara and Nicholas for the most part. I don’t remember what happened by the 50 page mark though. Was it the writing style that bothered you? Because I had some trouble with that.

Wow, the cover of Winterspell is beautiful! And a twist on the nutcracker tale sounds delicious, but now that I see you didn’t like it that much I’m a bit hesitant! And lol, half woman half spider? I have actually yet to come across that! xD

I say read it if you’re interested! I’m glad I read it and thought it was great in some ways, it was just not so great, or maybe just not for me, in other ways. I might review it because I do have some good things to say about it. But maybe borrow instead of buy if you decide to give it a go.

I don’t think I’ve heard of those half women half spider creatures before, although it does sound familiar, so I might have seen it somewhere once. Oh and I remember in star wars the clone wars the animated series there is a bit of backstory with someone who loses his legs and then has spider legs and later get’s robot legs. It was pretty disturbing to see thsoe spider legs under a human body.

It’s definitely weird how when you see something it suddenly seems to pop up everywhere. I’ve had a few instances as well. That sounds awesome that you cna borrow ebooks online. Not sure if that’s something libraries here do as well, although they probably only have dutch books, but who knows. I might have to look into that once. Although once you are an adult you suddenly have to start paying for a library card and I haven’t been to a library in a long time. I hope you have a great week!

It’s always weird when the same thing starts popping up everywhere, right? I think I’m getting used to the arachne though lol.

Yikes, you have to pay for a library card once you’re an adult? That’s not fair at all! I wouldn’t have a card either if I had to pay for it, so I don’t blame you. You have a great week too!
