Gaming News: November/December 2018 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Game Releases to Get Excited About

I really enjoy doing upcoming releases posts for books, and since I’ve discovered and started to enjoy visual novels and similar types of games lately, I thought it’d be fun to try doing upcoming releases posts for those too!

This is my first one, and I only have two games to share since games I’m interested in are harder to find than books I’m interested in, but that’s ok. Quality over quantity 😉

Distress by Light Machine // Nov 6

Distress

Description:

A fading distress signal from a space station that’s gone silent. A metropolis filled with dark secrets, death lurking in every alleyway. Welcome to Nova-8. Step into the boots of Demetria Barton, one of the galaxy’s greatest bounty hunters, and lead her team to a mysterious city in search of answers and riches.

Distress is a branching visual novel inspired by the likes of Silent Hill, Snatcher, and Mass Effect. Trapped in a city filled with deadly creatures and a ruthless militarized task force controlled by a shadowy administrator, you’ll have to use your wits and make tough decisions in order to survive. You’re responsible not just for your own life, but the lives of your crew as well. Make your choices. Live with the consequences.

Good luck, captain.

My Thoughts:

I’ve only tried a few visual novels so far, and none have been like this. This looks like it’s going to have mystery, danger, a hint of creepiness, and real consequences to making the wrong decisions. Plus, the art style looks super bold and unique. I’m excited to try this! It’s supposed to be available on Steam on November 6th.

Seventh Circle by Rock Candy Games // Estimated Dec

Seventh Circle

Description:

Seventh Circle is an urban fantasy visual novel.

Congratulations: you’re a mage.

Fresh out of college with a degree in the arcane, you’ve made your childhood dream come true by gaining admittance to the Trillian, a renowned league of arena battle mages, where the brightest young magical talents duke it out every week for money, fame, and bragging rights.

As you tangle with the Trillian’s big personalities–an uptight genius, a hot-headed would-be rival, a handsome haloed jock, and more–you’ll uncover a mystery stretching back decades, and you might just find love while you’re at it.

My Thoughts:

Urban fantasy in which I get to be a mage and have adventures with other supernaturally gifted people! I’m sold! That, and the art looks nice. Plus, it’s created by queer women, and it looks like it’s going to have some good diversity/inclusivity. Seems like it’s gonna be a great game! There’s no exact date for this one yet, but at this point in time, it’s estimated to be available in December, and it seems it will be available from itch.io.

Yay a gaming post! Both of these sound great- I especially love the description of Distress- but I’m totally down for an urban fantasy visual novel too. A degree in the arcane- why isn’t that a real life thing lol?

I feel like Distress sounds totally like your kind of thing. Kind of reminds me of the story you were posting on your blog in the past. I’m really excited to try the game! And the UF one sounds like a lot of fun! Seriously, wouldn’t it be great if we had that in real life?

I think most people that love books would love games too because there is characters, they tell a story, and my fav.. the world building! I love how the mages battle sound! and.. diversity! Yes! and I’m in for anything with the word “distress” in the title 😉

Thanks for supporting my game post 😘 And yeah, the types of games I play do usually have story and characters, so it seems a good fit for a book blog! I’m excited for both of these!

Pretty much! I like to say they’re basically choose-your-own-adventure books, but more technologically advanced, and with artwork. I’m not sure the strict definition, but there are some that are more complex with stats or other things involved, some are just reading the story and making decisions every now and then and getting different outcomes. I think they’re fun!

These two seem like they’ll probably be just reading the story and making choices every so often, nothing that requires gaming skills, so you might like it!

I hadn’t heard of these before. Distress by Light sounds good, but also a bit creepy. Seventh Circle sounds pretty good too, I like the idea of an urban fantasy visual novel. I might have to check that one out.
I actually don’t really keep up with upcoming games, unless it’s a sequel or from a developer/ publisher I already know of. I recently added a game to my mental wishlist that will release early next year tough.

It does sound creepy, and although I don’t normally read creepy books, I like the sound of this! And the UF one sounds fun.

Looking for upcoming games is new for me, but it’s kinda fun to get excited for things and have games to look forward to! I hope the game you’re looking forward to turns out to be fun 🙂

Very cool post, I saw this on twitter and being a gamer I immediately wanted to check this out. I’ll be honest I was expecting to find a post about triple A major game releases. Pleasantly surprised. I’ve got no experience with visual novels. If I wanted someplace to start what would you recommend?

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! Ha, nope, I don’t know anything about the big games. Never played them! I get easily stressed out by action-y kinda games. Tbh, I haven’t tried many visual novels yet, and w/o knowing your taste, I’m not sure I’d rec those. Monster Prom is a lot of fun, although I’m not sure if it’s really a visual novel or not. I’ll hopefully be reviewing both of these once they’re out though!

  5. Becky @ A Fool's Ingenuity

I haven’t played many visual novels so it’s awesome you can highlight a couple for me to maybe to check out. Distress sounds like it could be really good but Seventh Curle is definitely the one I’m more excited about. An urban fantasy visual novel? That is one I need in my life.

    1. Kristen Burns

Glad I could maybe help 🙂 I feel like Seventh Circle is the one that it seems like I would be more excited about, but I’m actually super pumped for Distress. I definitely want to try both though!

  6. Olivia Roach

I really love the premise for the novel Distress. I really think it would actually be one I would try. As usual, I’m forwarding this post on to my little sister because this is her kind of thing! There is a phone app game called Choices, and it kind of works like the second visual novel but then you play it on your phone. I had a few months where I loved it and was addicted to it earlier this summer. And I can totally imagine how that would’ve made a good story game to play on Choices 😀

    1. Kristen Burns

I’m super excited to try it, it does sound really good! Thanks for forwarding my post to your sister 🙂 That app sounds fun! Unfortunately my phone’s memory is full and the slot to add a card is stuck, so I can’t try any phone app games right now 🙁
