Update: Life and Books (5/20/18)

I was in a mood last week. I didn’t feel like doing this post. I didn’t even end up posting on Wednesday because I’ve been exhausted and anxious about health/life stuff, and then a bunch of blog-related things came up that made me a million times more stressed.

But, even though I still have the real life problems, I think I’ve taken care of the blog ones, and it has made me feel significantly better. Now I have lots to discuss, so let’s get to it!

(Update: I take that back. I still haven’t taken care of all the blog stuff, and I’m super stressed out -_-)

Blog/Bookish Updates:

First things first, is anyone else really frustrated with GDPR? I keep seeing different info everywhere. I’m doing the best I can, and hopefully it’ll be good enough.

Second, I switched webhosts! See, one of the things I keep seeing is that our sites need to be HTTPS now, which means our sites need an SSL. Unfortunately, my old host’s most basic plan does not allow you to have an SSL. In order to get it, you have to pay roughly $40 more a year for the upgraded plan. Then you either have to pay them $39.99 more for an SSL—the same one that you can get for $8.99 or less on other sites—or you can get one from a third party and pay the webhost $10 every time you need it installed/renewed. Also? Their tech support is awful. When I’ve gone to them with questions, I knew more than they did, and they gave me incorrect information. I’d been wanting to leave them for a while, and this was the push I needed, so I took the plunge and switched to ChemiCloud! I won’t be able to comment on how good their hosting is until I’ve been with them a while, but so far the customer service/tech support is A+++. They got my site migrated, set up an SSL, and answered the seven million questions I had.

The other company I’m angry with is Pinterest. They’ve apparently changed their rules so that now, if an image is linked somewhere, the pin is supposed to link to that same page. Which means, if you ever link book covers, for example, to Goodreads or Amazon (as I do), when those get pinned, those pins willy likely lead to the other site and bring you no traffic (depending on what plugin/add-on/extension is used). Bad news for me since I actually do get some traffic from Pinterest. Do me a favor, if you’re going to pin images from my blog, use the button that shows up on hover! Right now, that one is still linking here.

Fourth, I will be removing the comment reply notification plugin I use soon. That means you’ll have to check back if you want to see my replies to your comments. I am looking for a new, GDPR compliant plugin though.

Fifth, my privacy policy will be updated soon, and I’ll be adding a plugin someone told me about that I think would show a pop-up on your first visit with a box you have to check. (Update: The plugin does not do that. Does anyone know of a plugin that does? Isn’t that pretty much what we need in order to be compliant?)(Update #2: I don’t think we need a pop up except maybe for certain circumstances.)

Also, I’ve finally done some blog housekeeping. I updated my social sharing plugin because I was tired of all the extra crap that Shareaholic included. I deleted unnecessary duplicate images in my folders and changed the WP setting so it won’t create so many, which has significantly decreased my disk space usage. Don’t be surprised if you see more changes still.

Now for some good/bittersweet news… I had another small Pinterest spike (thankfully I had changed all the links to point to my blog after I pinned them), and I may have finally figured out what’s causing these. Pinterest regularly sends emails/notifications of pins you might like, so maybe my pins are sometimes getting included. Or maybe it really is just organic, since this time it happened very soon after I pinned the posts. *shrugs*

For more good news, I won an ARC of The Grey Bastards by Jonathan French! My first Twitter giveaway win, but there were 3 winners and only 5 entrants, so the odds were pretty good lol.

I also got bookmail from Skyhorse!

Dead Boys by Gabriel SquailiaThe Root by Na'amen Gobert Tilahun

Books I Received for Review:

The Root by Na'amen Tilahun
Dead Boys by Gabriel Squailia
American Hippo by Sarah Gailey
The Fire Eye Refugee by Samuel Gately

5/13/18: Dead Boys and The Root are from Skyhorse. American Hippo is from NetGalley. The Fire Eye Refugee is from the author.

5/20/18: I also got Penumbra and Shadow Magic from the author (Nazri Noor), but those aren’t on Amazon yet.

Books I Finished:

The King's Sun by Isaac Grisham
Djinn City by Saad Z. Hossain
Dead Indian Wars by Clark Casey

Wow. I really didn’t get much reading done. I guess I’m still in a bit of a slump.

5/13/18: The King’s Sun didn’t quite work for me, but it had a cool portrayal of yokai.

5/20/18: I enjoyed Djinn City and loved the portrayal of the djinns. I enjoyed Dead Indian Wars too.

What I’m Loving:

This week, what I’m loving is…

I guess I was feeling too grumpy the past couple weeks to love anything lol.

In Case You Missed It:

5/13/18:
– I reviewed Deliverance by Nicholas Sansbury Smith, another intense post-apoc in the Hell Divers series.
– I asked you all if you could guess which supernatural said some quotes with a quiz I made.

I’m still confused about the GDPR thing. I don’t use my blog for advertising and selling so do I need to do anything? I guess I need to check it out some more. Great haul of books. I have Dead Boys and just pulled it off my self to add to my to read pile.

    1. Kristen Burns

If you still want to get comments or see stats? Yes, I think you do. Although idk if you’re self-hosted? If you’re on WP or Blogger, you might already be covered. But you should check just in case! Dead Boys sounds like a lot of fun! Can’t wait to see what we both think.

  2. Greg

Aww stress sucks. And yeah GDRP *sigh* I just learned about this past week so I have some reading to do. Gah I should just quit blogging ha ha – who needs the hassle? But I won’t so the suffering will continue lol. Glad your host switch worked out well though!

That’s interesting about Pinterest. I don’t usually pin stuff but good to know…

Dead Boys looks good, and so does The Fire Eye Refugee. And ooh Dead Indian Wars- a little Weird West action??

This blogging thing is getting too fricking complicated 🙂

    1. Kristen Burns

Seriously at this point I’m so stressed that it’s starting to feel like blogging isn’t worth it. Idk if you have much to worry about though, being on blogger. I’m just… so confused about how this even supposed to work. Thanks, I’m glad switching hosts went well too!

The Fire Eye Refugee cover is so gorgeous! Yep, a paranormal western 😀

      1. Greg

Yeah it’s a mess. the more I hear the more concerned I become. You’re self- hosted right? so there’s more you have to do? I wasn’t sure if being on Blogger’s platform inoculated me a little or not, I have to learn more…

        1. Kristen Burns

I don’t know actually know how blogger works or anything, but isn’t everything pretty much out of your control? Yeah I’m self-hosted. It’s just so aggravating because they didn’t make anything clear, so there’s different info everywhere, and some of the stuff doesn’t even make sense.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks <3 *hug* I think I've got my privacy policy about as good as it's gonna get at this point, but thanks. Now it's more that I don't understand how exactly we're supposed to get consent or if the Jetpack stats is going to be compliant. It'd be great if they were more clear about all this stuff considering it affects almost every single website on the internet -_-

  3. Tizzy Brown

The GDPR stuff is so confusing. I think my blog is compliant now. The WP GDPR compliance plugin I mentioned doesn’t do a pop-up, but it gives a checkbox in the comment section and in the comments admin it displays the date when they accepted so you have evidence. It’s not compatible with Jetpack comments though, only the normal WP comment system. I also turned off my comment notification plugin.

I will have to register with ICO if I start earning money though, which not only costs but also means I’d have to put my home address on a public list! I wish they would make the rules clearer for bloggers, since many of us don’t have an office or accountants that we can list. Hopefully, things will be cleared up when GDPR gets up and running properly. For now I think it’s good enough to a) have a privacy policy that explains what data you collect, when and why and b) ask consent before you collect that data.

    1. Kristen Burns

Yeah, I realized the plugin doesn’t do that, but I also now realize we don’t need it to do that? It’s just so hard to find correct info. That’s smart though that it keeps a log like that, except it doesn’t help in the case of visitors who don’t comment.

Oh, you actually live in the EU? That really does suck that you guys have to register now if you want to make money :-/

      1. Tizzy

Yes, I live in the UK. There seems to be so much confusion over this here, even for the big businesses. It seems ironic that a law that is supposed to be about protecting people’s data requires us to add our address to a public list! It would put me off posting pictures of my daughter, for example, if anyone could just look up my home address. I’m hoping they will clarify the rules for us bloggers in the future as all the documentation is mainly aimed at big businesses and it’s hard to tell what actually applies to us.

  4. Evelina @ AvalinahsBooks

Congrats on taking care of the blog ones 🙂 I am having a set of my own – I implemented https. And it’s not really working xD still struggling with the site, so if you visit, it might also be spotty. But I’m hoping for the best!

And yes, GDPR. So very frustrated. And also, I work in marketing. So that means, I’m not just frustrated due to my blog. I’m frustrated because of my job too. So basically, GDPR frustrates me in almost every single aspect of my life -.-

I actually will remove my comment reply notification plugin too. I already found the one I will be using. It allows you to receive replies, but you have to MARK that you want them. I can tell you which one it is, if you want? At least *some* people wouldn’t need to check back for replies that way.

I still need to do the privacy policy. And I know nothing about it. Do you have any good source that explains what we need to say there? Especially if we use Jetpack? Maybe I just need to go on the Jetpack page and find that… They should have some suggestions for their users.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! I feel so relieved to have finally switched webhosts, tbh. I haven’t been able to switch to https yet because my nameservers are still propagating from the host switch.

      Yikes, so you’re doubly frustrated!

Yep, none of us are ever gonna know when our comments are replied to anymore, haha. I don’t think a checkbox is enough. The one I have already has a checkbox, and you can set it to be unchecked so that users have to check it. But it doesn’t have a way to unsubscribe, and I think that’s necessary for compliance? Does the one you found have unsubscribe?

I mostly used the WP template and this site for Jetpack, although I don’t think Jetpack is even fully compliant yet, so some things might still change: https://jetpack.com/support/for-your-privacy-policy/

  5. Erica Robyn

Oh my gosh, GDPR is a mess! I’ve been trying to do research, but I just don’t have the time. I’ve listened to a few podcasts, but I definitely need to learn more. For HTTPS, I’d definitely look into another provider if you can. That seems way too pricy! On Blogger, Google updated to HTTPS for free.

UGH! Pinterest…. I knew an update like that was going to come someday… there’s so much duplicated content on there. Hopefully they will realize that just doesn’t work and that they need a new plan!

    1. Kristen Burns

It really is a mess. It’s so unclear about what we actually need to do. I already switched hosts to one that has set up an SSL for me, so it’s all good 🙂 I couldn’t deal with the other one charging me an extra $60 a year just for that!

Yep, the Pinterest thing is so frustrating! I doubt they’ll actually care about those of us it affects though :-/

  6. sjhigbee

Hm… yes, I’ve not even really started to think all that much about the new rules and regulations regarding privacy and all that stuff! And I know I need to. Congratulations on getting your blog moved across – I don’t blame you for moving as that sounded like a really bad deal. It’s one of those grotty chores and needs doing from time to time but can turn into a major nightmare if it goes wrong. It sounds as if you’ve landed on your feet, Kristen. No wonder books aren’t exactly featuring at the centre of your life right now, though Djnn City sounds intriguing and I like the look of that cover. Here’s hoping the coming week is a LOT less stressful.

    1. Kristen Burns

Yeah, you should probably look into it and make sure you’re compliant! Thanks 🙂 I’m so relieved to be with a different host now, honestly. I was just so scared something would get screwed up. But yeah, it’s no wonder I haven’t gotten much reading done!

  7. Michelle@Because Reading

I don’t understand the whole GDPR thing. I might have my co-blogger look into it since she is better at that than me. Sorry this week was so crazy for you. You got a lot done and it’s good to have the blog transfer over easier.

I hope this week is better! Have a great week and Happy Reading!

    1. Kristen Burns

It affects all websites that collect info (which includes name and email for comments, tracking stats, etc.) because we could have visitors from the EU on our sites. As far as I understand at least. So you might want to check it out a bit more.

  8. Shannon

I had no idea all this blog stuff was going on! I should probably get on that. (Although I’m currently on Blogger, so I think google handles that? I could be wrong though. I do plan to switch to my own hosting — eventually, so I really need to start keeping up with this stuff.)

I hope next week is better for you.

You have a lot of intriguing books listed here! (My TBR list is about to become even more out of control.)

    1. Kristen Burns

Yeah, you should probably look into it, but you might be ok with Blogger since they’re probably taking care of things. I don’t really know anything about Blogger myself though. But yeah, whenever you switch, you’ll have to make sure you’re compliant.

Thanks 🙂 Lol I’m always happy to be a TBR enabled 😉

  9. Suzanne @ The Bookish Libra

OMG, yes. I’ve been stressed out about GDPR all week and have no idea if I have done everything I need to do. It’s the one time I’ve regretted being self-hosted because I’ve always winged it and have only a basic idea of how things work on the site and what data is collected, etc. The comments part is driving me especially bonkers. I never added a plugin or anything for comments so I’m just using the basic comments system that installs with a WordPress installation and have no idea what to say about that. I don’t know where that information is stored, etc. I wish there was a basic flowchart somewhere – if you have this, do this- or better yet, someone to look at your site and say you need to do these certain things and then you’re good to go. Sorry for the rant – as you can tell, it has been a little frustrating, lol.

    1. Kristen Burns

Seriously it’s so unclear, and everyone is so stressed out! It’s also nearly made me regret being self-hosted. If you’re using the basic WP comments, then the info WP has put in their privacy policy template is fine, and you have even less to worry about. (But you need to set up the policy under settings -> privacy.) But seriously, a flowchart would be so helpful.

  10. Lola

Sorry to hear this week was stressful for you. That’s good to hear you got some of your blog issues dealt with at least. I think the GDPR and what it’s goal is, is a good thing, but it sure is a lot of effort of figure out what you need to do to be compliant. I’ve been reading about it a lot these past few weeks for one of the authors I work for and for my own business. Just added a privacy policy to my blog as well and updated the one on my site. I hadn’t heard of the https thing about GDPR tough. but it does sound like a good idea to switch your host if their customer support is so bad. Your new hosting provider sounds like it has better customer support.

That’s strange about the Pinterest thing. i always link my covers to Goodreads, i didn’t realize that means the pin now goes there too. but why would I link the cover to my blog post, that doesn’t make sense as people are already there when they see the image. or not link it to anywhere at all would be a solution as well I guess.

Sorry to hear you’re removing the comment reply plugin . I always find it so handy to receive e-mails when someone replies to my comment as I never remember to check back. Guess I’ll have to check my plugins too for GDPR compliance, but I am sure we’ll see a bunch of updates in the coming few week still.

That’s awesome you won a giveaway on twitter! I hope it’s a good book. And that’s good to hear you enjoyed two of the books you read recently. Have a great week!

    1. Kristen Burns

The idea behind GDPR is a good one, but they made it so complicated and didn’t give clear instructions to website owners, and that’s what’s so frustrating. I keep seeing that we need to be https, but idk, it could be wrong. I wanted to switch hosts anyway though.

The Pinterest thing is so frustrating too, and I feel like it’s going to affect a lot of book bloggers since a lot of us link book covers offsite. I’m so used to linking covers, and I have a plugin that automatically grabs the photo and links it, so it’ll be difficult for me to change that.

It is handy to receive emails, but I don’t think the plugin is GDPR compliant.

Thanks! I’ve actually already read the book, I just really wanted a physical copy because it’s the best book I’ve read so far this year! Thanks, you have a great week too 🙂

  11. Karen

At some point blogging is going to get so complicated I’m going to quit. lol

I haven’t done anything but I’m on blogger so I’ll have to check that. I think my one area of concern is that I d giveaways and therefore collect information. I do have a privacy policy but probably need to update it.

Karen @ For What It’s Worth

    1. Kristen Burns

I keep thinking that too. That eventually it’s gonna be so complicated it won’t even be worth it.

Yeah, idk if people on Blogger have to do anything. I have no idea how giveaways are gonna work though.

      1. Karen

Oooh – it said my comment didn’t post yesterday so I came back today (hence the 2nd comment abotu the rain lol)

I had to switch to the https and update my privacy policy to disclose google analytics/cookies. Blogger already has a notification on blogs about cookies for EU visitors.

        1. Kristen Burns

No worries, I just deleted your rainy comment for you lol. Yeah, one of my plugins was showing people a white page?

I could never even get GA to work for my site, so I just removed it. But I did switch to https.

  12. Sophie

So GDPR related you are only required to comply if you get a source of income from your blog. Say you are Amazon associate etc. I stopped my associate program as I did not earn anything and now I am not under GDPR regulation even if I’m not using any personal data for anything else than statistics and reply to comments.
Second: why do we have to go SSL?
Third: I hope you’ll feel better this week!

    1. Kristen Burns

I think you need to comply whether you get money or not, whether you’re in the EU or not, because you still might have EU visitors, and the law is about their personal info, which includes names, emails, and IP addresses even. I mean, I could be wrong, but that’s the way I’ve seen it explained :-/

Idk, something about making sites more secure? I’ve heard it’s a requirement for GDPR.

      Thank you!

  13. Samantha

I so don’t understand all the GDRP stuff. I just don’t know what to do! I am not techy enough to figure it out and trying to figure out mailchimp and how to be compliant there is enough to make me never send another newsletter! GAH!
I still can’t figure out pinterest. I pin book reviews using a marketing calendar plug in, but that is about as far as I get!

    1. Kristen Burns

It’s so confusing and frustrating! And that’s another problem, a lot of people with blogs are not techy, so there are going to be so many blogs out there that are just accidentally not compliant even though we’ve tried. Idk anything about MailChimp, sorry :-/ I just use WP to send post notifs.

  14. JJ @ This Dark Material

Congrats on the giveaway win—no matter the odds, it still counts! 😛

And I’ll add my own (mild) frustration to the GDPR complaints. I spent most of last night putting together site and privacy policies, which I think will cover most if not all of my bases. I don’t use affiliate links on my blog, which is a huge help! Thankfully Disqus is making what changes they need to for compliance, so my comments will be ok, and Blogger has already moved to HTTPS. Since I’m not self-hosted I don’t have much control over the nuts and bolts of Blogger…but at least sorting it all out is more Google’s problem than mine? I think? I’m sure in the next couple of months we’ll have a much better idea of what (if any) new changes we still need to make.

I hope you have a good week Kristen, and that the blogging stress goes down 🙂 ♥

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks XD I agree, I don’t care what the odds are, I’m still happy to win!

This whole GDPR thing is a mess. But yeah, idk if you have to do much if you’re on Blogger. This whole thing is nearly making me regret being self-hosted since I’m stuck pretty much figuring out all my own crap -_-

      Thanks <3

  15. Aj @ Read All The Things!

Sorry you’ve been stressed out. Hopefully it gets better soon. GDPR is so confusing! I’m hoping that Blogger will take care of any major issues for me. My blog is really basic. I feel like I barely control anything on my site. It’s all Blogger stuff. Have a good week!

  16. Stephanie Jane

GDPR is such a nightmare! I wrote a Privacy Policy last night which I hope has covered everything, but I’m not totally sure. Like you say, lots of conflicting information around the issue.
I hope your mood picks up for the end of May and less external stuff impacts on you. Will you get a Whitsun Bank Holiday as an extra recharge day? Not sure if its just a UK thing.

    1. Kristen Burns

It really is. It’s so aggravating that they couldn’t just give clearer info. But if you’re on Blogger, they might’ve taken care of most things.

      Thanks <3

    1. Kristen Burns

Actually, that was prob the best thing about my week lol. I mean, I hate that I lost 6 months of hosting that I already paid for with the old one, but I’m glad to finally be rid of them, and the customer service at this new one is fantastic. Thanks!

  17. Luna & Saturn

We hope your health/life issues end up alright. Just take all the time you need to relax yourself if you need it. 🙂 Oh wow, the blogging webhosts etc sounds messy, hope that ends up all good for you too. We’re on the Blogger platform, so we don’t really have these issues. Congrats on winning the ARC, and enjoy your week,

    Luna & Saturn @ Pendragons

  18. Barb (boxermommyreads)

All the technical stuff you posted just gave me a headache so I can see how it stressed you out. I LOVE that cover of Dead Boys and need to find a copy. I hope this week goes much smoother for you!

    1. Kristen Burns

Lol yes, I was about ready to pull my hair out. Glad to have found a new webhost though. Dead Boys sounds fun, I’m looking forward to that one! Thanks 🙂

  19. Annemieke

I wish wp covered it but nope, only if you are a paid user which I am not… So I can’t get a DPA or a cookie wall. I’ve done everything else I can do though.

  20. Laurie - Barks Books

Those are some gorgeous looking books there! I hope you enjoy them. As for the blogging stuff, I am so completely oblivious and honest haven’t had an urge to post anything more than a review. I tend to go through these spurts of laziness and times when I’d rather just read than post. What is this GDPR thing? Does it only affect you if you’re on your own platform? I use blogger and booklikes and hope I’m not going to find or something. If that’s the case I am done blogging!

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! Yeah I’ve been struggling to keep up with blogging stuff lately, like responding to comments in a timely manner -_- Honestly idk how much you have to do for GDPR if you’re on Blogger or Booklikes. Hopefully you’ll figure it out!

  21. Daniela Ark

So much good info about GDRP here K! I didn’t know that about pinterest! UGH UGH! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this! I also have to go and read all the wonderful info you have been sharing! You little guru! 🙂

  22. Zeee @ I Heart Romance & YA

Yeah GDPR is confusing. I am not going the https route since I’m really not getting a lot of info from comments (like credit card info, etc). Anyway, it’s still really confusing but I try my best. I also had to create a privacy policy – it was not fun at all! arrghhh

    1. Kristen Burns

Idk if the https is actually required or not, but I wanted to be safe, and I needed to switch webhosts anyway. But I guess all we can do is try our bests to figure it out!

  23. Wattle

This GDPR stuff is doing my head in. It almost made me swap to WordPress.com…almost 😛 I’m using the Subscribe to Comments Reloaded plugin now, and have it come up as ‘don’t subscribe’ automatically so the user has to change it (and then noted it stores email addresses in my privacy policy under comments). I’m not sure if I have to do anything else to be fully compliant, but it has an unsubscribe button on emails (at least in my experience of it on others sites) 🙂

I switched hosts for SSL too (well, that was one of the reasons) heh. It was just easier to do so.

    1. Kristen Burns

Seriously, if my blog wasn’t so customized, I think I might’ve lol. Someone told me about that plugin, it does seem compliant since it has an unsubscribe option, but at this point, I just don’t feel like dealing with any extra things.

Lol looks like we both just wanted to switch hosts and finally got the push we needed with the SSL thing!

  24. Sam @ Spines in a Line

Those sound like some interesting books you picked up! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
And sorry about all the trouble you’ve had in switching hosts! I only use the free version but I can imagine the headache these changes are causing

  25. Di @ Book Reviews by Di

Hey Kristen! What’s happening??? I hope you are far less stressed out now and that you feel like things are more under control. I need to GDRP IMMEDIATELY but keep running out of hours in my day. Yeesh.

I’ve been busy busy all over my life so blogging has kind of taken a back seat. Instagram stuff has picked up though because it’s so easy to do that off my phone. In fact, it’s preferable and I generally have my phone and a few spare minutes here and there during the day.

I hope to catch up a bit this week and next month since I’ll be around a bit more in my regular life!

    1. Kristen Burns

Hi! I am even more stressed now about other things, actually, but at least not GDPR anymore -_-

No worries, you’re allowed to be busy! Ah, that’s cool that you’re still keeping up with Insta 🙂

I hope you’re managing to get caught up some!

  26. Olivia Roach

You’ve certainly been busy getting on top of all that blog stuff. You did all you needed to do for GDPR and more, which is great! All the technical side off to the side. Like most bloggers, I went through my struggles and difficulties and well, worked my way through it. So I feel you!! I also got locked out of my twitter (yay?!) for doing nothing, and I am seriously angry. Because it said I was locked out for being younger than 13??? I’m 19!!! So now I can’t access it and they better return my account to it’s full functionability just as I left it in a few days! I miss tweeting already 🙁

Sorry for ranting in your comment box :/

Honestly I don’t even know if I’m GDPR compliant or not, but I did my best! Oh no! Did you get back into Twitter yet? That’s terrible, especially since it’s such a weird reason!

I’m so bored of GDPR. I’m pretty certain it’s mostly not an issue for bloggers (or a major one) unless you’re giving data out to folks you shouldn’t do or are holding card details etc. I’m pretty the ICO won’t be after us otherwise but better to be well informed I guess and well prepared. I hope you manage to get all the blog things sorted because you’re way more prepared than I am. I’m just gonna hope no one tries to complain about me to the ICO and be happy.
