Bookish Musings: Can You Guess Which Supernatural Creature Said These Quotes? (A Quiz!)

To celebrate Wyrd and Wonder 2018 (a bookish/blogging fantasy event taking place during the month of May), I thought it’d be fun to make a quiz! And it’s no secret that I love supernatural creatures, so what better topic?

Some of these quotes are probably pretty obvious, some are more vague, some might be tricks 😉 Also the creatures I ended up using were kind of random. It’s hard to find quotes for something like this though, and I wasn’t going to sit for ten hours reading through books just to find them, so I did the best I could. I think it still turned out fun!

*Note: A few of these quotes are from advance copies, so they may be different in the final copies.

*Also note: I’ve included an all-text version at the end in case anyone wants/needs that for any reason.

Take the Quiz!

Text Version

I don’t know if the quiz is accessible to everyone, or maybe you just want to read the quotes without a quiz, or maybe you want to make it even harder? So here’s an all-text version. You can skip to the comments if you already took the quiz!

Each supernatural creature is used at least once. Two of them are used twice. The choices are:

Wolf Shifter
Vampire
Zombie
Djinn
Demon
Incubus
Ghost
Kelpie
Gnome
Dragon
Gargoyle
Leprechaun

Here are the quotes (highlight to reveal answers):

Q: The transition was undramatic. They just slowed down, then stopped, and after a while I realized they were corpses. It disquieted me at first, but it’s against etiquette to notice when one of us dies.

A: ZOMBIE – Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion

Q: “Look. . . . That one is shifting into a bear. Idiot, I’m not really afraid of bears. I just love the way they taste.”

A: WOLF SHIFTER – Steal the Light by Lexi Blake

Q: “Did you really know Oscar Wilde?” he asked.
“No,” said [name]. “It’s not like in the books. You don’t run into historical personages all over the place. I did meet Empress Matilda, but no one remembers who she was.”

A: VAMPIRE – Real Vampires Don’t Sparkle by Amy Fecteau

Q: I had never touched a human before. Okay, I had eaten plenty of them. Their bones are nice and crunchy and the muscles aren’t as stringy as some of the other critters I had eaten. They were much better than fish. Fish is slimy.

A: KELPIE – Kelpie Blue by Mell Eight

Q: “We love sports,” [name] said. “Whale surfing, giraffe racing, ostrich baiting—why back in the day they used to ride pterodactyls.”

A: DJINN – Djinn City by Saad Z. Hossain

Q: [Supernatural creature] strength might not let me lift cars, but I will tear up some shrubbery all day long.

A: VAMPIRE – The Utterly Uninteresting & Unadventurous Tales of Fred, The Vampire Accountant by Drew Hayes

Q: Shame made his face hot as a demon’s cook fire. Yet as much as he regretted stealing the coin, he loved the thing. It sparkled at him, wooing him, stirring his heart more than any girl ever had.

A: LEPRECHAUN – The Gold-Son by Carrie Anne Noble

Q: “Want to see my gardens?”

A: GNOME – The Midnight Gardener by R. G. Thomas

Q: “[I] could scare the truth out of him, if you let me . . . or we could perhaps burn him a little . . . just a little, I promise. . . .”

A: DRAGON – Black City Demon by Richard A. Knaak

Q: “Sex is our primary skill set.” [. . .]
“It’s not your primary skill set,” she protested weakly.
“Actually,” he purred, his eyes darkening to bronze, “it is.”

A: INCUBUS – The Shadow Weave by Annette Marie

Q: Jet had heard Rage-Boulder mutter “fucking rock star wannabe” under his breath a few times. Unsure what a ‘rock star’ was, Jet decided it must be a good thing. Rocks were the best.

A: GARGOYLE – Stone Sentinel by Jex Lane

Q: “I have five children…or rather, I had five. There are only four, now. My eldest son ate the baby and proclaimed her soul a delicacy.”

A: DEMON – Swallow You Whole by Jasper Black

Q: For a moment, he stopped and stood next to a girl having her picture taken by a friend. He laughed a little, flashing his best smile. I bet it would really freak this girl out if I showed up in the picture.

A: GHOST – The Ghost Chronicles by Marlo Berliner

Q: Day slugged me in the gut as hard as he could. Damn near ruptured my spleen, I noticed later upon taking it out and checking it.

A: ZOMBIE – Braineater Jones by Stephen Kozeniewski

Ooh a quiz. Love quizzes. And I kicked a little butt. 🙂 I got 11 of 14 so I’m apparently an expert ha ha. I totally guesses on the gargoyle one, so that was a fist pump moment. Yes I take quizzes seriously. 🙂

I liked the Kelpie Blue quote!!!

Clearly we need more supernatural quizzes in life…

    1. Kristen Burns

Nice! Ah but the gargoyle one has a bit of a clue 😉 Internet quizzes are serious things, I would expect no less of you.

There were a few times in Kelpie Blue when he’d just suddenly say/think something like that, and it would crack me up lol.

  2. Atheinne

I got proficient, yay! I haven’t read any of the books in the quiz but I loved the quotes. Funny and witty that gets a chuckle from me almost every time LOL

  3. Daniela Ark

I was trying to do it last night when I first saw the tweet but I was failing miserably because I was so tired LOL so… take 2! I got Supernatural Expert!!! I was so not expecting that! MOI is very proud of herself. This was SO MUCH FUN! And wow yes I can imagine how much work it took to find these quotes! So thank you for taking the time to do it I really loved it! Have to read all these books?? now I want to read a few of them! LOL

    1. Kristen Burns

I def understand being too tired to focus on things lol. Awesome! You see? It’s a sign that you need to read more urban fantasy! Thank you ??? You *should* read some of these!

  4. Angela

I think I did pretty good! 11 out of 14. I think one or two of the ones I got wrong were pretty obvious mistakes on my part, too. Very fun!

  5. Lola

I got 9 right! Some were pretty easy to guess, others were difficult and other felt like a trick question and then turned out it wans’t, lol. It was a fun quiz and still pretty challenging overall.

    1. Kristen Burns

9 is still good! Lol then I succeeded in making my questions and answers tricky 😉 For some of them I chose answers that all seemed fitting, for some I legit just threw a random supe in there to throw people off 😛

  6. Bookworm Brandee

Wow! First of all I’m so impressed you created a quiz! That’s so cool!! I enjoyed taking the quiz and am thrilled to have scored as a supernatural expert. 😉 Fun stuff, Kristen!

  7. Di @ Book Reviews by Di

11/14! Not bad! 🙂 Although I didn’t recognize any of them until I hit The Shadow Weave!!!!! Thanks for including that one. It warms my Annette Marie fangirling heart. 🙂

Great quiz Kristen and though I’m a little late – I’m finally hitting up your blog again!

    1. Kristen Burns

Awesome! I thought of you when I was making this because I was like, “If Di plays the quiz, she’s definitely gonna get this one right,” lol.

Thanks! And don’t worry, you’re allowed to have a life outside of visiting my blog 😉

  8. Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight

This is SO FUN! I surprised myself and got 10 right, I am an expert! The awesome part is, I only read ONE of these books (Warm Bodies) so I guess I am just not awful at figuring this out? And extra points because I haven’t read some of the genres in general- though I was suuuuper mad at myself for missing the ghost one because I KNEW IT I just wasn’t paying enough attention haha. Seriously, LOVE this post, what a great idea!!

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! And yay, you did great! It wouldn’t have been any fun if you’d read all the books and *knew* all the answers for sure anyway 😉 I’m glad you liked it so much!

Fun quiz! I only got 9 right, so I guess I still have some work to do! I had no idea what a kelpie was but now I’m intrigued! I haven’t read any of these books, so I’ll have to check them out!

  11. Wren

I got 11/14! At first I thought I was going to fail but things turned around 🙂 I guess I’m more knowledgeable about our supernatural friends than I thought

    1. Kristen Burns

You did amazing! Only one other person told me they missed only one, and no one that I know of got them all right. I’m glad you liked the quotes, I tried to pick good ones XD
