While I didn’t love this book quite as much as the first one, I still enjoyed it and am glad I continued the series.
A lot of the things I liked about the first one were still present, like the realistic (rather than overdramatic and trope-filled) depiction of high school, the supportive female friendships, and the unique portrayal of the Underworld.
I also liked the characters again. Well, I actually liked Hadrian a little less because I didn’t like his pushiness and the way he assumed he knew Spencer’s feelings. Thayer, however, became more interesting, and I liked seeing his friendship with Spencer.
Another thing I really liked was how well the author showed the changing feelings and confusion inside Spencer. The love triangle has never been just sudden or out-of-nowhere. Spencer’s feelings and confusion have been a constant thing, but I mean that in a good way as I found her thoughts realistic.
I had a few issues with this book that I didn’t have with the first one though. One was that there were more grammar and spelling errors—not enough to ruin my enjoyment of the book, but enough that it’s worth mentioning since I know some people are more bothered by that. Another was that a few small things didn’t quite make sense to me, like what the point is of Thayer marking people for death if people can still die before their time. I also disagreed with some of Spencer’s reasoning for her love triangle decision, *SPOILER ALERT* I’m not saying she didn’t make the right choice for herself, just that I don’t think it means you’re no longer in love when the butterflies are gone. *END SPOILER ALERT* Lastly, I really don’t like in books when the MC’s best friends just so happen to end up having feelings for the love interest’s best friends and vice versa because the odds of that actually happening are slim to none. The progression of the relationships was written in a natural enough way, but that just always bothers me.
Overall though, I still thought the story was strong, most of the characters were likeable, and the emotional war inside Spencer’s head about the love triangle was really well written, and I enjoyed reading it!

Making a deal with the god of the underworld, then falling for him? I’ll bet that pisses Persephone off to no end. Plus high school? For some reason with books like this (or YA in general I should say) I always seem to age up the characters in my mind- unless it’s explicity that they’re in high school, you know. I just always seem to think of them as older, but if I were a teen I’m sure i wouldn’t. I don’t know. 🙂 Anyway I’m kinda curious who Spencer picks- I think I know but maybe not. 😛
Persephone is definitely pissed lol, for various different reasons. I don’t know if I age up the characters in YA. I probably do lol. I do like mature characters. But they actually do spend time in the high school and all that in this series. Haha, most love triangles seem to be like that, kind of obvious but you’re still not certain. I wasn’t entirely sure about this one until it got further into this book, and then she made her choice at the end.
Sorry you had a few issues with this book, but I’m glad that you still enjoyed it. I’m curious what you will think of the ending. If you really love it then I would consider trying this series. 😀
If you don’t mind some typos, I feel like you might like this series. My review for the third book goes up next week, but that’s all that’s out right now, and it’s not the end, so I can’t help you there lol, at least not yet.
Glad to hear this was a good sequel even though it wasn’t as good as book one. It does sound like the love triangle aspect is handled well here and in a realistic way with how her feelings and confusion have been there all along.
I usually don’t even notice grammar or spelling errors and when I do notice them I usually don’t mind, unless I can’t figure out what the word is supposed to be, but I do know some people really get bothered by them.
That’s a specific thing to dislike. I can’t really think of any books I read where that happened with the MC’s best friend falling for the love interest best friend, but it does seem unlikely of that happening. I have read a few were two friends of the mc are in love with each other.

Lol it is rather specific, isn’t it? But this is the second series I can think of in which it has happened. And I remember being really bothered by it in that other series too. This series made it more natural though at least, so I wasn’t *as* bothered.

I’m happy that the second installment was satisfying even if it wasn’t quite as much as the first book. (that dang sophomore book slump) I’m planning to at least start this series next month since you have me very curious about how the Greek mythology is portrayed here and also I really think I’ll like Spencer. I think her confusion and changing feelings are very realistic for someone her age. It seems as though she does some maturing as well and that’s something I like to see. I also like that the author doesn’t make high school so eye-roll worthy. LOL I look forward to seeing your thoughts on the next installment, Kristen. 😀
