Book Review: Raven (A Creepy Hollow Story) by Rachel Morgan

Raven's dream is to land an internship working for a certain prestigious faerie fashion designer, and she's so close she can almost taste it. But she's fed up with her parents' high society ways, and, when she starts a forbidden romance with one of her guards, the differences between their lives become even more clear, and Raven will have to decide what she values most.

Review:

*I received an ecopy of this book from the author. This has in no way influenced my review.*

This was an enjoyable little addition to the Creepy Hollow series. It had a story all of its own though about characters who have been very minor in the overall series (to be honest I didn’t even remember who Raven was), so you don’t need to have read the rest of the series to enjoy this. The only thing that might be a problem is understanding the world and some of the magic, like the Faerie Paths they travel through, but even that probably wouldn’t be that much of a problem.

Raven was a likeable, relatable character, Flint was sweet, and I liked their forbidden romance. It was also fun getting to see a different side of the Creepy Hollow world since all the main books have been about Guardians and battles and saving the world and whatnot whereas this was about fashion and clothes-casting magic and high society (or rather, a girl who lived in high society but didn’t feel like she fit in with it). And there was still a bit of action and mystery in the plot, though it stayed uncomplicated since the book was more focused on the romance and Raven kind of coming into her own instead of following in her parents’ footsteps.

Honestly my only “issue” is that I’m just not much of a novella person. I like to read whole series about the same characters, so a novella just isn’t enough for me. But if you do like novellas, or if you just love the Creepy Hollow world and want to see another side of it or get to know more about one of the minor characters, this was still an enjoyable and well-written story that I can recommend!

Talk to me!

Have you read Raven by Rachel Morgan?
If you had faerie magic, would you rather fight baddies like Flint, or create magical clothes like Raven?

*nods* these are my covers lol. Although not as nice as the covers to the regular series, it still sorta has that look. And Raven Rosewood- that’s quite the name. I get what you mean about novellas, I’m not always a huge fan either just because they’re so short, but it is nice if fans of the world can get a little fix if they’re done with the main series. 🙂

    Glad it was good.

Yeah this cover is nice but the ones for the main series are better. But yeah, I can definitely see why people do like novellas, especially when they’re in the same world as a series. Thanks!

Novellas are so hit or miss for me as well…I like getting little snippets to sample authors, and I also like getting to know side stories about characters from books, but when new characters only get novella I sometimes feel shortchanged.

It can definitely be fun getting to know a bit more about side characters, though I prefer novellas that give me more info on the main characters that I already know and love.

OMG, I SOOO agree with you! I really am not a “novella” type of girl! They’re just too short and they never seem to give us enough of the book. I think novellas are good if they are like, the book preceding a series, so that we can get little tid-bits of what’s coming in the next book. If this book was longer, maybe it could have been better. BUTTT, I do love forbidden romance, so this book gets a “plus” for me! <3

I agree, I like novellas if they’re a prequel or something about the main characters whom I already know and love but always want to know more about. But this was a review copy lol, and it was still good writing 🙂 And I like forbidden romance too!

Well, I’m happy you felt it was a worthy addition to the series even if it didn’t completely trip your trigger. I’m with you on novellas – sometimes they really work for me but it seems like most of the time I’m left wanting.

Sounds like a fun addition to the series and that’s nice it could work as a standalone as well. I usually like forbidden romances when well done ofcourse, I like the tension and sense of danger it adds. I think I am more of a novella person than you, i usually like little additions to a series like this one, especially if I really enjoy a series I like every extra bit I can read about it. And I like how they usually give you a bit more story or another point of view.

It could definitely work as a standalone, and I agree, forbidden romance is fun! But yeah, I think you do like novellas more than I do. I really only like them if they’re about the main characters and really add to the main story or give me background of those characters or something. Or if it’s a perspective of a character I really like.
