There were some things I really liked about this book and some things, well, not so much, so… time for some lists!

Things I Liked:

1) The book was quirky and absurd and fun. I couldn’t help but crack up at some of it (especially the bits about Hailey’s clothes coming to life)!

2) Asher was adorable. Rather, his confusion in trying to understand and adapt to human ways and emotions was adorable. I know he was this big, scary monster, and he did some messed up things, but he wasn’t human, so that’s kind of to be expected. He was literally just learning what emotion was, how dating worked, etc. And some of the things he said and did, like replacing all of Hailey’s stuff and even getting her flowers and a book for the librarian, was touching and swoon-worthy.

3) Hailey’s friendship with Giselle was sweet. I loved the way Hailey never gave up, even when Giselle pushed her away, and ended up having a really great effect on Giselle.

4) The author has clearly put thought into the story. The backstory about the Envoys, Hailey’s connection to them, Fin’s background, etc. was a bit confusing at times but interesting and unique.

Things I Disliked:

1) The actions and reactions of characters required too much suspension of disbelief. Sometimes it was part of the absurd fun, but it bothered me that Hailey never really questioned it and that even people who weren’t connected to the paranormal didn’t act very believably.

2) I couldn’t get into the love triangle because I didn’t like Fin. I wanted to like him because he was sweet, playful, and there for Hailey sometimes, but he was a complete jerk other times. If you actually care about someone, you never treat them that way. He did have explanations sometimes, but there were other times when I didn’t see any valid excuse, like when Hailey got locked out of her room and he refused to open her door, leaving her to sleep in the hall all night. And all the times he went back and forth between hot and cold within a span of minutes. I know there were certain good things he did, but overall he seemed manipulative and dishonest. *SPOILER ALERT* Yes, the ending revealed certain things in his defense, but he still treated her poorly and lied about things, like how he was only bringing those girls back to his room to tell them it was over even though she saw him undressing one when they were still in the hallway. *END SPOILER ALERT* So for those reasons, I didn’t believe Fin’s feelings for Hailey or understand where her feelings for him came from. But I’m willing to concede that there may be more explanations I don’t know about yet.

Things I’m Unsure About:

1) Hailey was strong-minded and confident… sometimes. She stood up for herself to Asher when he got possessive, stood up to most things that got in her way actually, but she always let Fin get away with treating her badly. So I’m not sure how I feel about her character.

The Verdict:

As I said, the book was fun. And most of my issues boiled down to my dislike of Fin, but other readers may love him. So the positives outweighed the negatives enough for me to enjoy the book, though I think I may have liked it more if I actually were a teen rather than an adult who reads YA. But the ending really threw me for a loop! Even though I haven’t decided yet about continuing, it makes me think things will get even more interesting in the next book.
