Short Story Review: A Cupid’s Wager by Deanna Wadsworth

When Lio, a cupid, shoots a closeted human with a gay lust arrow and accidentally interferes with a true love arrow, he knows he's going to be in trouble. It turns out to be the Aztec god Ethan whose arrow he interfered with, and Lio strikes a deal with him in an attempt to avoid trouble, but they both end up getting more than they expected.

This was a fun, little erotic novella/short. No plot really, mostly just sex. But it did crack me up, sometimes because Lio was funny, other times because it was just that ridiculous in the best possible way. Some of the word choices were rather crude and unsexy to me, but that just seemed to be Lio’s character and voice since it was told from his POV. Ethan also seemed a little too comfortable and experienced considering it was his first time with a man, but hey, that’s erotica for you, and it does get some explanation in Naughty Cupid.

Speaking of which, if you already have Naughty Cupid, you don’t need to read this because this is actually part of that book. (Naughty Cupid is a second edition, expanded version of this.) But if you just want a standalone funny and erotic short about sexy times between a cupid and an Aztec god, this is just the thing for you!

Overall, I loved the idea of the whole cupid thing with the different arrows and magic and whatnot that was introduced and was intrigued to read more, and the sex was fun!

Book Blurb

The name’s Lio, and I’m a cupid working for the Gay Division of the Inter-Dimensional Association of Cupids. An Aztec god, whose modern name, Ethan, doesn’t make him any less scary, just busted me shooting a closeted human with a gay lust arrow. I might find him sexy with all those tattoos and piercings, if I didn’t have a rule against getting it on with other supernaturals—especially ones working for the Straight Division. Now, to save my butt I’ll have to strike a bargain with this tough god. But what I didn’t see coming was my little wager not only risks my career, but places my broken heart completely in Ethan’s hands.

I did know going in that it was just a little erotica novella thing, so I wasn’t expecting much plot, but I figured I’d make sure everyone else knew that too :-) And you know me, I only read shorts when they go with a full book or series lol, so I was ok with very little plot since I knew there’d be more (in the full length book). And yes, a touch of humor is always nice!

Oh I never read novellas just on their own either, but I thought it was like a prequel to the full length book. But then it turned out to be the first part of the full length book since this was the 1st edition, and the full length was an extended 2nd edition. So it still turned out ok lol, but some people DO like novellas, so I figured I might as well review this separately too. And yeah it was fun :-)
