Cover Characteristics: Book Covers featuring Spaceships/UFOs

Technically the topic this week is UFOs, but really whether something is a UFO or not is relative, right? I mean, to the aliens in the UFO, it’s actually just a spaceship. Or it could be humans flying around in a ship, or something that’s not even a ship, but if someone happens to see it and doesn’t know what it is, voila! It becomes a UFO. Yes?

This was all just a really long way of saying I’m including both covers with spaceships and with UFOs because it’s rather blurry line when it comes to book covers. Also because I found more covers with spaceships lol. So… enjoy 🙂

Cover Characteristics is a weekly meme hosted at Sugar & Snark. This week’s topic is:

Last Day on Mars by Kevin Emerson

The colors are so bright, and the giant [I’m guessing] sun makes the whole thing look very sci-fi and daunting.

Chaos Station Series by Jenn Burke & Kelly Jensen

I think that’s a ship in the corner of Chaos Station… but anyway, these are just nice covers!

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

This one kind of has an old-school, B-movie sci-fi feel to it.

Judgment of Mars by Glynn Stewart

I’m not even sure if that’s a ship or a creature, but hey, that still makes it an unidentified flying object 😉 And this scene looks interesting!

Ninety-Five Percent Human Series by Suzanna Williams

Ninety-Five Percent Human by Suzanna Williams | reading, books, book covers, cover love, spaceships, ufos
Sarah by Suzanna Williams | reading, books, book covers, cover love, spaceships, ufos

These covers have a great look to them with the font style and the ships and the space feel. Plus Suzanna is a fellow blogger, so you should check out her site!

Katherine “Kitty” Kat Series by Gini Koch

Alien vs. Alien by Gini Koch | reading, books, book covers, cover love, spaceships, ufos
Alien Separation by Gini Koch | reading, books, book covers, cover love, spaceships, ufos

These just have gorgeous, detailed artwork!

I might be pushing it with this one, but if I saw that thing flying in the sky, I would not be able to identify it, so I say it counts as a UFO. And I just love the artwork on this one!

Outsystem by M. D. Cooper

This one looks intense! And I swear there’s a ship on here, you just have to look really closely, haha. (It’s on the right in the bottom half.)

My Favorite #1:
Starflight Series by Melissa Landers

Starfall by Melissa Landers | reading, books, book covers, cover love, spaceships, ufos

These are just so pretty, right?

My Favorite #2:
Letting Lier and Finding Pax by Harper Moon

I have loved this cover ever since I saw it. The artwork is gorgeous, and it makes me feel more connected to the characters just from looking at it.

I like Alien Alien…you feel as if you have dropped into it in the middle of the battle with chaos everywhere. I do like apocalypse covers! I also like the Suzanna Williams covers for the colours and planets. Nice topic! I like space themed things.

    1. Kristen Burns

There are like 15 covers in that alien series, and they’re all fantastic. The rest just didn’t have ships lol. And oh, you’re right, the Ninety-Five Percent Human ones do have nice colors!

  2. Angela @ Simply Angela

Ooh, interesting theme this week! I’ve only seen a few alien/ufo covers, and those were romance covers so they usually have a hot guy with funny eyes standing in front of a cosmic background. lol I really love the Starflight covers. They just seem to catch my eye.

Right?! I’ve been in a big sci-fi and space mood lately, so this post was fitting! I love those Starflight covers too, and I also want to try Small Angry Planet!

  3. Barb (boxermommyreads)

I love Alien vs Alien and Outsystem. I still need to read The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet plus purchase it’s sequel. I’ve only heard good things about them. Nice bunch of covers this week!

I like Found a lot and Last Day on Mars looks very SF-ish, I agree. Starfall is probably my favorite though, I’ve always liked that cover. Alien Separation is nice too (looks vaguely Dan dos Santos- ish) and so is ninety-Five Percent Human. Nice picks this week.

The Long Way cover definitely has that B movie feel. I actually like the other cover version of that book better but it doesn’t have a ship. 🙂 The cover design on this one is good though with the title dominating the cover. I want both covers for my collection!

We need more spaceship type topics I think.

I figure the Starflight ones will be most people’s favorites since everyone seems to like them. I like Starflight better than Starfall though. The Alien ones are dos Santos, or maybe those were the ones by that other woman he worked with or whatever it was we determined that one time? Close enough lol. And the Ninety-Five Percent ones are nice and also look very sci-fi!

Yeah admittedly the Long Way cover isn’t my favorite, but I couldn’t use the other cover because it didn’t have a ship. This one is still eye-catching at least! This actually ended up being a harder topic than I thought it would be.

one thing weird about me [among MANY] is that I love sci-fi BUT I’m not crazy about spaceships tales and/or covers. :$ I think that’s the reason why I haven’t started the Starflight Series yet. Though of your list that’s my favorite [book 1] surely because the spaceship is kinda small and in the corner and the rest of the cover is stars and space which I DO love 🙂

    1. Kristen Burns

I’ve recently really gotten into space sci-fi for some reason. I blame Starflight! And lol it does have a really pretty cover, and the whole stars and space thing is always pretty!

I like the covers for the Chaos Station series, I’ll have to make sure I don’t miss your reviews for those as I am curious to hear about them. I’ve seen the cover for Outsystem before, it’s a nice one. And Starflight ofcourse, I have that book in paperback and it’s such a pretty cover. So simple with few elements on it, but it really looks stunning. And I can see why Letting Lier and Finding Pax is your favorite, the cover is so pretty. I haven’t seen many artwork covers with space. It really looks great and it makes me wonder about the story. I also like the cover for Alien Separation and it makes me wonder what that creature is on her shoulder, it looks cute!

    1. Kristen Burns

You should check out those reviews, I can see you maybe liking that series. Not sure yet when they’ll be posted though. Outsystem is a good one, and the Starflight ones are so pretty! I’m a little jealous you have a paperback of Starflight 😉 I do love that Letting Lier and Finding Pax one though. I just love the style of artwork and it seems to have so much emotion. And that’s true, there aren’t that many artwork covers that involve space. Haha, the creature is kinda cute but also a little freaky looking.

I wasn’t exactly sure what to include either! What if we’ve been tricked all our lives about what UFOs really look like? You picked some stellar covers!

    1. Kristen Burns

Haha, right? And really, it just stands for unidentified flying object, so technically anything could be a UFO if we don’t know what it is! Thanks 🙂

  8. Bookworm Brandee

Once again, I didn’t realize there were so many covers with UFOs although I don’t know why I’m surprised since there are so many space-themed books out there. I really like Suzanna Williams’ and Gini Koch’s covers. But yeah, Melissa Landers’ are fantastic! As is Harper Moon’s…but I think my most favorite are Landers’. 😀

    1. Kristen Burns

This was a hard one actually, so there really aren’t that many covers with UFOs! I agree, I love the Starflight ones, but the others you mentioned are great too!
