Cover Characteristics: Book Covers featuring Mountains

The topic of mountains ended up being harder than I thought it would be, so I went with a rather lax interpretation while looking for covers. That means hills, cliffs, mesas—really any of sort of relatively large, earthy, dirt-filled clumps of land—were all fair game in my mind.

I feel like most of the covers I found have legit mountains, but then, I live where it’s so flat that even a 10-foot hill excites me (Have you ever rolled down a hill? It’s like the best thing ever!), so I may not be the best judge of what’s a mountain and what isn’t.

Anyway, that was my long-winded way of saying I don’t know what actually qualifies as a mountain. Now here are some covers with mountains on them! (Maybe.)

Cover Characteristics is a weekly meme hosted at Sugar & Snark. This week’s topic is:

I’ve just always liked the covers of this series. That place looks so magical, and the green and red contrast so nicely.

I’ve also always loved the covers of this series. The artwork is fantastic.

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

That looks vaguely like a mountain in the background on the left side, right? Anyway, it’s a nice cover with pretty muted colors.

The Forgotten Mountain by Heather Lyons

I’m not a fan of the giant spider, but, other than that, it’s pretty and rather fantastical looking.

Master of Crows by Grace Draven

That’s right, it’s my favorite glorious hair guy, back again! I just really love the artwork and the flowiness of this cover.

Night Broken by Patricia Briggs

I love all of the covers for this series because Dan dos Santos. They’re so detailed and amazing.

Sworn to Raise by Terah Edun

This one has fantastic contrast with the blue and red, and that woman looks fierce.

Pirates of Fathoms Deep by Megan Derr

This is yet another series with covers that I’ve always liked. Something about the bright colors and the giant archway with the small person looking out in the distance just really draws my attention. (And I’m pretty sure those are mountains in the distance… right? Maybe?)

Confidante by E.M. Prazeman

I just really like this one. The character looks interesting, the art/editing/whatever it is style is great, and it’s got nice colors.

My Favorite:

I love, love, LOVE the covers for this series. (I would also love, love, LOVE to read this series, but that’s not really the point of the post.) This artwork is just phenomenal, and the character looks so interesting and mischievous, and the background is intriguing, and really what’s not to love?

lol… You MUST really have loved Pirates of Fathoms Deep, because hm… yes… I think those are mountains… Having said that – it is SUCH a cool, eye-catching cover, why wouldn’t you include it?? Because it is also my favourite. However, these are a smashing set of covers – thank you so much for sharing:)

Hahaha when I saw it while scrolling through my book lists I just kinda figured, “Maybe one of them will have mountains off in the distance that he’s looking at,” and lo and behold it did! Maybe. I’m still not sure actually lol. But yes, I do really like that cover! Glad you like it too 🙂

I have never paid attention to mountains or hills. My gaze falls on the foreground of a cover. I only pay attention if a mountain is the vocal point of a cover. That could be boring , haha. Cool post

Yeah, I had to really focus on looking in the background when I was looking through covers to find these lol. It’s harder than it sounds since I think we all naturally look at the foreground. And I agree, covers that just have a mountain as the focus aren’t usually very exciting to me either. Thanks!

I like The Pirates ofFathoms Deep or Night Broken the best- not sure which. Maybe night Brokenjust because that’s a kickass cover with the moon and the whole nighttime vibe- plus a spear! dos Santos knocked that one out of the park. Fathoms Deep just looks so otherwordly. I like Doon too, a bit less, but it looks like she’s going through a gate into another world or something.

Truthwitch I like mostly for the swirling water thing- I think that one has elemental magic so that’s a draw.

Those are both great covers for sure. The Mercy Thompson books aren’t maybe quite as detailed as some of his other covers, but they’re still great nonetheless. And yeah, Fathoms Deep does look otherwordly, very high fantasy and eye-catching. Doon too.

Truthwitch is probably my least favorite of the bunch here, but I also like the swirling water thing lol.

Oh great topic. I just got a book for review this week with a mountain on it, lol. Mountains are pretty to look at and I think they can add something to a cover. I like the rolling green hills on the Doom cover. And I like the Truthwitch cover, it always makes me curious about the book. the Forgotten Mountain title does fit the theme and how the mountain seems to be the focus. Ah yes the Master of Crows cover looked familiar to me as you featured it before once already. And those Patricia Briggs covers are really pretty, I still plan on reading that series eventually, it’s on my wishlist. I do like the Asian feel of the Shadows of Humanity cover, but it wouldn’t be a cover that immediately catches my attention.

Lol perfect timing with the book you got! Maybe I could’ve used it for my post 😛 They can add to a cover, it’s just that they’re usually in the background and thus you don’t really notice them specifically and see them as just more a part of the whole. I love all the rolling green hills on the Doon cover too. And the Forgotten Mountain does have a nicely matching title and cover. And lol, yes, I do like that Master of Crows cover. I’d like to try the Patricia Briggs series too. I just completely love the covers in the series of that Shadows of Humanity one (the others just didn’t have mountains), but that’s one reason this post is fun, it’s cool to see the different tastes people have in covers!

Great choices!! I love the cover for Doon. Also, that looks like such a fantastic series. I always hear great things about it, but I haven’t read it yet.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! I’m not even sure what the Doon series is about? But I wouldn’t turn it down if I could get it for free lol since it does look interesting.

      1. AngelErin

I’m not 100% sure. All I remember is that it’s romance and fantasy. At least I think so. I just know everyone keeps telling me to read it and that I would love it lol.

The Forgotten Mountain and Sworn to rise is my favorite on here. Love the title for Forgotten Mountain as well. Iv’e actually done Cover Characteristics again this week! Have a look and enjoy the rest of your day!

Ooh I’m jealous that you have such a pretty cover on your shelf! It really is whimsical and magical looking! It always gets my attention when I see it.
