Cover Characteristics: Book Covers featuring Butterflies

So, butterflies.

While not the most difficult topic, you wouldn't think butterflies would be THAT common on book covers, right?

Right?!

WRONG. SO RIDICULOUSLY WRONG.

I started out well, I knew of a few off the top of my head and found some more on Amazon until I had some nice ones to choose from. But then I had this brilliant idea and was all, "I'll look through my kindle library and my TBR for more!" Then, while trying to get ahead on posts and looking for other book covers, I just kept coming across more and more books with butterflies.

Why? Why do all these books even have random butterflies on the cover?

Anyway, that is the story of how I ended up with, like, 40+ books to choose from. I almost shared 20 covers with you guys this week, but I decided to save my second set of favorites for a part 2 post (so there will more butterflies in the future)!

Cover Characteristics is a weekly meme hosted at Sugar & Snark. This week’s topic is:

A hilarious book, though it was the cover that drew me in in the first place.

Tithe by Holly Black

The foreign one is definitely more beautiful and magical, but I thought you all might appreciate the English version link, too, in case you actually want to read it 🙂

So many good ones. You did better than I did though, I didn’t find as many. I like both Holly Black ones a lot, as well as Unforgiven and the Galante one. And Splintered is very distinctive.

Thanks! I didn’t even mean to find so many lol. The Splintered covers are super distinctive and easily recognizable, which I imagine is great branding for the series. But of course I like all the book covers 🙂

Wow I never realized so many covers have butterflies, but not that you shows these all I do recognize some of them and can think of a few more, it’s more that I usually don’t think about cover sin terms of common elements. So it;s fun to see how different all those covers incorporate the butterfly. How it’s sometimes just a small addition or element on the cover or even hidden, while other times it’s the central focus. And it’s fun to see how differetn all those butterflies are. The Unseen trilogy covers are really pretty, with the small butterfly and almost simplistic design, with every cover a different colour. Great post!

I totally agree with what you’re saying! It is interesting to see all the different ways one similar element can be used with different genres, to portray different moods, etc. I almost picked the Unseen ones as my favorite because I love them, too. Thanks!

Seriously, there are so many! But yes, they really do pretty up a cover, so I guess I can’t blame the authors and cover designers for using them so much 😛

Omg I did NOT realise butterflies were so popular!! But now that I think about it….yes. I love the Splintered covers. XD They just capture the book so intensely wonderfully. *happy sigh* I also have read Tithe and The Darkest Part of the Forest….so maybe Holly Black has a thing for butterflies?!?! 😛
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

Right? It does seem as though Holly Black has a thing for butterflies. I haven’t read the Splintered series, but it is most certainly on my TBR. I guess it bodes well for me if the covers match the inside since I love them!

Wow, you’re right! There are a lot of books with butterflies on the cover. I’m interested to see what’s in your part 2! And you should definitely read the Splintered series – I’ve really enjoyed it so far 😀

    1. Kristen Burns

There’s just, like, a never-ending amount of books with butterflies on the cover! And I definitely will get around to reading it eventually! You know TBRs are lol. But I’ve recently gotten really into retellings and want to start reading more, so it’ll be perfect for that.

  5. Shannon @ It Starts At Midnight

LOVE this! I had no idea that there were so many butterfly covers either! I love The Darkest Part of the Forest, for sure. And the Splintered series! I have never seen Butterfly before (and no shocker that there’s butterflies on that one) but I find it quite pretty! I look forward to more butterflies!!

    1. Kristen Burns

Seriously, who’d ever think there’d be butterflies on a book called Butterfly? But apparently it doesn’t matter whether a book is about butterflies or not since they seem to be on every cover ever 😛
