Cover Characteristics: Book Covers featuring Apples

Alright everyone, today I have a list of Snow White retellings!

Oh, wait, no, I meant apples. It’s book covers featuring apples. But it might as well have been a list of Snow White retellings since that’s what almost every book cover with an apple on it is about. That or Adam & Eve references. Apparently apples have very strong symbolism associated with them and you mustn’t dare use them for anything else!

Even though they’re pretty. And red. And sometimes green. And yummy. Especially when they’re covered in caramel.

You know, I actually made caramel apples once and put different topping on each apple—sprinkles, crushed pretzels with chocolate drizzled on top, crushed Oreos, etc.—and let me tell you. They. Were. Delicious. If you’re not on a diet or allergic to apples or something, you should definitely try this because it tastes amazing.

But anyway, now that I’ve made everyone hungry, here are some covers with apples on them to, well, I was gonna say distract you, but they might just make you even more hungry now. Oops, my bad. At least the pretty covers will be a feast for your eyes 😉

Cover Characteristics is a weekly meme hosted at Sugar & Snark. I went rogue this week, so my topic is:

This is unique and pretty.

Snow White Sorrow by Cameron Jace

It’s kind of eye-catching, and Snow White looks a little evil…

Winter by Marissa Meyer

I’m actually not a huge fan of this cover, I don’t really know what it is that bothers me, maybe the font? But it’s still not bad, and I was short this week.

The Girl with the Silver Eyes by Willo Davis Roberts

The artwork is so pretty, and the colors are so light and soft, and I’m curious about the levitating apple.

Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholk

When in doubt, use Wink Poppy Midnight because that cover is pretty and has got everything on it.

The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge

This is so cool looking the way the peel coils around, maybe like a snake?

Nameless by Lili St. Crow

I love how the font looks and kind of matches the straggliness of the dress.

Caleo by James Crawford

I have always loved this cover. It’s so pretty and looks so interesting, and it’s like his hand is in 3D.

Fairytale League Series by S. E. Babin

The Hunt for Snow by S.E. Babin | reading, books, book covers, cover love, apples
Snow's Lament by S.E. Babin | reading, books, book covers, cover love, apples

I love the artwork in both of these, and I love all the red in the first one.

My Favorite:
The Shadow Queen by C. J. Redwine

This one is just so STRIKING. The contrast is amazing, and the black apple really gets your attention because apples just aren’t supposed to be that color. Even the little green leaf and tan lettering work perfectly. And the simplicity is perfect.

Did not realise that so many books had apples on their covers! I haven’t actually read any of these books – but I have seen them around in the blogosphere, and I know I really enjoyed reading some of Cameron Jace’s other books! 🙂 Lovely post, as always, Kristen!

This actually turned out to be a harder topic than I expected because I thought there’d be more lol. I would like to try Cameron Jace’s other books but haven’t had the chance yet. Thank you!

I love Winter’s (although the hardcover under the jacket is even better; it’s a nice black book with beautiful red lettering on the spine). But I love The Lunar Chronicles! Have you read it?

I think my favorite cover though is Stitching Snow. I really like the intricacy of the wires and design of the apple and whole cover. It’s just really fun and very relevant to the book.

    Great post!

Ooh a black book with red lettering? Definitely sounds like my kinda book! I haven’t actually read Stitching Snow, so I didn’t know it was relevant to the book, that does make a cover even better 🙂

      Thanks!

I’m not usually a fan of fairy tale retellings, but there sure seem to be a lot of them out there. They’re very popular I guess. I’ve had caramel apples a handful of times but it’s been ages- I’m not a big apple eater in the first place so that’s probably why. 🙁

Anyway The Shadow Queen is straight up my fave this week. I like the black apple the gree leaf and the dripping… whatever is dripping. lol The Lie Tree is creepy and is actually the first one to catch my eye from the collage. Probably my second favorite although I also like Nameless- with her long dark hair and the white dress and the way she’s holding the apple.

I do like certain fairytale retellings. I think it’s fun seeing the creative ways the old stories are twisted around and changed while still using the same basic stuff.

I’m actually not a huge apple fan either, but when you add caramel and all sorts of good stuff, they become infinitely better tasting lol.

Seriously, I love that Shadow Queen cover! There was no contest this week, the other covers never had a chance, haha.

Now I want caramel apples, I don’t think I’ve ever tried them, but it sounds delicious. I have eaten chocolate apples once and those were really good. I never realized most covers with apples are either snow white retellings or adam and eve. references. The only cover with an apple I can think about right now is Twillight. I kinda like the covers for that series. I guess the apple there probably also has some sort of adam and eve relevance.

Oh those fairytale league covers are pretty. I like how she stands there so casually with a sword in her hand and eating an apple and the artwork is stunning! I also like the Wink Poppy Midnight cover as it has so many small details, but at first glance it still seems a pretty simply and stunning concept. And I agree with you The Shadow Queen cover is really good as well, so simple, but it all fits so nicely to create a great cover. With the apple in that strange colour and the text that almost seems carved into it and then the leaf that is normal green. And the apple looks so realistic and then that black drip on the bottom of it just ruins the image of a normal apple and makes it obvious there’s something wrong with it. Great list of covers!

Haha you should try them! I mean, you’re always cooking and baking and whatnot, and caramel apples are simple. I mean, they’re a lot of work because you have to melt the caramel, put sticks in the apples, set them in the fridge on a tray with wax paper to cool after you put the toppings, etc., but they’re worth trying at least once. Though you will probably need someone to help with keeping the caramel stirred and whatnot if you try it. I’ve never had chocolate on apples, but I imagine that’s probably good too.

Yeah, it just seems like most covers with apples are Snow White retellings because of the infamous poison apple. I have to admit I don’t think the Twilight covers are particularly special, but I do like that they’re black and red 😛

I love those Fairytale League ones! I agree, the artwork *is* stunning. But the Wink Poppy Midnight is one I’ve always liked too, and The Shadow Queen is so simple but gorgeous! Thanks!

The Lie Tree is dEFINITELY my fave… but I have to say, you totally had me believing there were so many snow white retellings until I read your blurb up top. I was wondering how I’d missed that they were a genre of sorts now!

    1. Kristen Burns

Most of the book covers I found with apples really were Snow White retellings lol since it has that whole poison apple thing, but I did manage to find some that weren’t for the post (though I think like half of them in the post are lol).

I love the S.E. Babin covers and actually think I own one of those on my Kindle. I read Shadow’s Queen and have to admit, it was largely a cover read, but I really enjoyed it. I think I am going to have to check out The Girl with the Silver Eyes – the cover is really cool. I am one of the few who didn’t like Wink, Poppy Midnight but it does have a pretty cover.

    1. Kristen Burns

I saw one of the S.E. Babin ones on Netgalley at some point and considered requesting for the cover lol, but I stopped myself because even though I like retellings I wasn’t sure I’d really love it. The Girl with the Silver Eyes is such a pretty cover too. I’ve also heard negative things about Wink Poppy Midnight, but it was never one I was interested anyway. The cover is great, but it didn’t sound like my kind of story.

“The Girl With Silver Eyes” brings back my early years of school so much! A friend read it (anyone with silver eyes in the novel can make things levitate with their mind) and we all began to obsess over it, searching for any flecks of silver in our eyes. Even if there was none we pretended we could still make objects move. XD
Anyway, ramble over. I love the “Shadow Queen” cover the most as well, and now I really want to start reading it. It’s been on my TBR for quite some time. Have you read it? 😀

    1. Kristen Burns

Haha, I loved your rambling. That’s so cute that you looked for silver flecks in your eyes!

I haven’t actually read any of the books on my list week. I think The Shadow Queen is on my maybe TBR? It sounds sounds kind of like my kind of book and has an amazing cover, but I feel like I probably wouldn’t *love* it.

I’m sure I’ve commented on this yesterday!!!!! Oh my goodness – comments are my cryptonite this week…. BUT I did tell you that my husband grew up on a apple farm/orchard, so apples are big in my house. Luckily I love it. I like the one with the black apple…. The Shadow Queen. Have you read the book? Seems interesting! Good choice this week! Here’s my CC for this week: http://marelithalkink.blogspot.co.za/2016/07/cover-characteristics-eggs.html

    1. Kristen Burns

Oh no, I’m sorry the internet ate your comment! But I imagine apples would be pretty big your house if your husband grew on them like that. I like apples, but they’re not actually my favorite fruit. I need to find a husband who grew up in a pomegranate orchard, haha.

I haven’t read The Shadow Queen, but I just love the cover! Thanks 🙂

      1. Mareli Thalwitzer

I’ve read a book about a pomegranate farmer once! If I remember correctly, he turned out to be the killer…… SOOOO If you meet the pomegranate farmer – contact me IMMEDIATELY.

        1. Kristen Burns

Oh no, haha, ok, I’ll stay away from any pomegranate farmers from now on! Not that I ever ran into any in the past, but you never know when it might happen 😛 Kinda disappointing though. Pomegranate are expensive, I could’ve used some free ones!
