Cover Characteristics: Book Covers featuring Alcoholic Beverages

I feel like urban fantasy and alcoholic beverages make an oddly good combination in books, or at least on book covers.

However, I couldn't actually find very *many* covers with alcoholic drinks on them that I liked. So I expanded a bit and included a couple covers that just had drinks in general.

And now, since I don't have anything more to say about alcohol, I'm just going to get on with the covers :-P

Cover Characteristics is a weekly meme hosted at Sugar & Snark. This week’s topic is:

Speakeasy by Suzey Ingold

This one is actually not a fantasy book, but I’ve always been fascinated by the Prohibition Era which means the title appeals to me, and I like the art.

Sparkled by Gina LaManna

Also not a fantasy, but pretty in a really minimalistic way.

Elfin Series by Quinn Loftis

Rapture by Quinn Loftis | books, reading, book covers, cover love, drinks, alcohol
Surrender by Quinn Loftis | books, reading, book covers, cover love, drinks, alcohol

Ok this probably isn’t alcoholic, but, as I said, I couldn’t quite find enough for the topic. And they do say your should never eat or drink anything in Faery, which means the drink isn’t just some innocent fruit punch, so that, I don’t know, counts for something, right?

Drink, Slay, Love by Sarah Beth Durst

This isn’t alcoholic either—in fact I’m pretty sure it’s blood—but blood is basically alcohol to vampires, right? Actually, I just read a book in which the vampire literally did get drunk every time he fed. So ha.

Trailer Park Fae by Lilith Saintcrow

Is anyone surprised by this choice? Anyone? There are some beer cans near the bottom, so it counts, dammit. This was a hard topic, and you know I can’t resist using this cover since it’s basically my favorite of all-time ever. MY OBSESSION IS PERFECTLY HEALTHY. WHO ASKED YOU, ANYWAY? I didn’t choose it as my favorite for this though since it’s not very alcohol-y.

A Criminal Magic by Lee Kelly

So I think that’s actually magic in the glass, not alcohol, but the magic is like alcohol… I think? Whatever. It’s still a martini glass.

Prim & Proper by Jordan K. Rose

I just adore the art style on this cover.

Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge by Paul Krueger

A dark and mysterious cover with a great font.

Fairy on the Rocks by Katharine Sadler

I actually don’t love this one since I feel it looks a bit unprofessional, but the sparkles look magical.

I just LOVE how glowy and pretty and magical this one looks!

hahaha you got me here! I was squinting and frowning and WTH? where is the drink in TPF???. Since you mentioned it the first time it has been in my TBR I’ve been wanting to get to it! Though Fairies, who are close friends with dragons, are not may favorite creatures [because of the high fantasy thingy] Love HIS PIC LOL! AND he lives in a trailer park for god sake! it can’t get any more urban than that 🙂

I’m so afraid you’re gonna hate it because it seems like so many people do and the way it’s written doesn’t *sound* urban and gritty, and then you’re never gonna trust my judgment again lol. But I don’t see faeries as being a high fantasy thing? I don’t think any of the faery books I’ve read were high fantasy. But yes, I will totally scour every detail of that cover and use it in as many of these posts as possible, haha.

Lol I’ll trust u no matter what 🙂
When I think of fairies for some reason Lord of the rings comes to mind! And those were elves lol lol sooo now I thought about again and the only faires I do remember were UF! like in Mortal Instruments and Sookie Stackhouse 🙂
I need a new brain lol!

Well elves fall under the broad spectrum of fae, so, I mean, at least you weren’t *that* far off 😛 I have actually read some UF that had elves, but I totally get the elves-LOTR connection since every time I think elf, the first thing that pops in my head is Orlando Bloom lol.

I had to think really hard about this one, but that’s because I forgot that wine was an alcoholic beverage! I’ve seen a lot of wine covers…or vampires drinking blood. Who knows what it is.

You did a wonderful job with a hard topic. A Criminal Magic is one of my favorite books and in it, magic has all the effects of alcohol so I think you nailed it on the head. I love looking at the your cover features and always seem to add a book or two to my wishlist.

Thanks! A Criminal Magic has been one of my most anticipated books of 2016 because I love the prohibition era and I love urban fantasy, so perfect combo! I have it, I’ve just been too busy with review copies to read it. And don’t worry, I always end up adding some to my TBR too lol.

Where did you find all these?? lol these are pretty good. Down with The Shine is my favorite too, but I like probably half of these a lot. Prim and Proper is nice, and so is Drink, Slay, Love. That title. And drinking blood through a straw? Love it.

    Lol about Trailer Park Fae.

    I like Sparkled. Nice cover.

And LAst call at the Nightshade Lounge is growing on me. Love the title, and the “magic and mixology” thing has me curious. And that dark green background…

    1. Kristen Burns

I found most of them on my TBR lol. It does always crack me up when vampires drink blood in unconventional ways though! Like the straw or when they sip it from a blood bag as though it’s a juice pouch 😛

I also got rejected for Nightshade Lounge -_- Not bitter about that one either… lol. It does sound really good. It really does seem like alcohol and magic make a good combo! And of course, green is to you what red is to me, haha.

I love the cover for Down with the Shine, I just saw a review for it this week on another blog and added it to my to-read list, it sounds like a good book too. It’s probably my favourite cover of these as well. It’s so magical and shiny and just a tad dangerous as well.
And the trailer park fea cover is a great one, so I can see why you include that one ;). And a book about the prohibition era, that sounds interesting. Will have to look that one up on goodreads.

I got denied for Down with the Shine on Edelweiss 🙁 So I really want to read it too, and I definitely love the cover. I’m reading A Criminal Magic right now though and really liking it so far! Not sure yet if it’s your kind of book, but I’m probably going to review it at some point after I finish 🙂
