Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Words of Wisdom from Books I’ve read This Year

I’m finally back to TTT! I haven’t participated the past few weeks because the topics weren’t for me, but quotes? I couldn’t resist quotes.

The problem though is that I love quotes too much. I’m a quote fiend. I regularly highlight (in my Kindle, no need to have a conniption about me defacing my books, fellow book lovers) between 50 and 100 quotes in any given book I read.

And considering I’ve read almost 150 this year so far, how on earth was I supposed to narrow that down to ten?!?!?!

Eventually I decided to get more specific and go with words of wisdom because we could all use more of that in our lives, yes? And I don’t know about you, but books have been one of my greatest teachers in life lessons.

These may not be the absolute best (which bothers the perfectionist in me) since I didn’t have the time to read through thousands of quotes, but they’re all solid advice that I have taken (or am trying to take!) to heart.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at The Broke and the Bookish. This week was about quotes, so I edited my topic a bit to:

Top Ten Words of Wisdom from Books I’ve Read This Year

Divergent by Veronica Roth | books, reading, book covers
Insurgent by Veronica Roth | books, reading, book covers
The Key to Erebus by Emma V. Leech & Roisin O'Connor | books, reading, book covers
The Immortal Circus by A.R. Kahler | books, reading, book covers
Sidhe by Amanda Meuwissen | books reading, book covers

10. Bravery

I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different.

-Veronica Roth, Divergent

9. People

People, I have discovered, are layers and layers of secrets. You believe you know them, that you understand them, but their motives are always hidden from you, buried in their own hearts. You will never know them, but sometimes you decide to trust them.

-Veronica Roth, Insurgent

8. Getting to Know Someone

There is a difference between knowing a man and knowing his history.

-Emma V. Leech, The Key to Erebus

7. “Normal”

Normal is a horribly overrated word.

-A.R. Kahler, The Immortal Circus

6. Compassion

It isn’t how you act at your lowest that proves who you are, it’s how you act when those you love are at theirs.

-Amanda Meuwissen, Sidhe

Verum by Courtney Cole | books, reading, book covers
Addict by Lexi Blake | books, reading, book covers
Incubus by Amanda Meuwissen | books, reading, book covers
Seduced by Pain by Alex Lux | books, reading, book covers
Reap the Shadows by Annette Marie | books, reading, book covers

5. Respect & Trust

Answers that are not freely given aren’t really answers at all.

-Courtney Cole, Verum

4. Hope

As long as you are alive, there is hope. Full stop. No arguments or questions.

-Lexi Blake, Addict

3. Moving Forward

The thing about moving slow is…you still have to move forward.

-Amanda Meuwissen, Incubus

2. Being Yourself

You’ll be miserable your whole life if you fight who and what you are. But if you accept yourself, all parts of yourself, you’ll know a freedom you’ve never imagined.

-Alex Lux, Seduced by Pain

1. Life

Some problems aren’t fixable, but that doesn’t mean you should stop. That sense that you can’t move forward … that’s the trap. It’s better to take the best future you can manage with what you have, than to put your life on hold trying to fix everything in the hopes of a perfect future that might never come.

-Annette Marie, Reap the Shadows

I LOVE this one: “You’ll be miserable your whole life if you fight who and what you are. But if you accept yourself, all parts of yourself, you’ll know a freedom you’ve never imagined.” Reminds me of when I was a kid and my mom would always tell me, “You better learn to love yourself. You’re the only person that will around for your whole life.”

I like how you did this with words of wisdom. The one from Insurgent might be my favorite- so true. I remember liking that one when I read it. And #7- normal. Another good one. 🙂

I love this post! I, too, am a quote fiend! I have this little book where I write all my favourite quotes as neatly as I possibly can, but sometimes I make the odd mistake and it annoys me to no end hahaha xD I really liked your Veronica Roth quotes, and all your other ones are beautiful too! I’ll have to do a top 10 of my favourite quotes one day, too! 😀

Thanks! I could never keep a handwritten book because that would annoy me like crazy too! But I’m glad to have found someone who shares my quote obsession 😛
