Bookish Tag Post: This or That Tag

I saw this tag over at A Fool’s Ingenuity, and it seemed like a fun one! The tag was originally created by Ayunda @ Tea and Paperbacks, and it’s a very simple one that thankfully doesn’t require me to think of new questions for the people I tag (seriously, those just require way too much effort).

So anyway, here are some bookish things you may or may not already know about me!

Oh, and I tag everyone who wants to do the tag :-)

Reading on the Couch or in Bed?

In bed! That’s my favorite place to read because I have a hard time focusing, and reading in bed with no distracting sights (since the lights are off) or sounds is the best way for me to actually be able to get lost in a story. I do also do plenty of reading on the couch though.

Male Main Character or Female Main Character?

Male main characters! I’ve talked before about how I prefer male protags as well as how male characters seem to be more emotional. I still end up reading about more female protags because there just seems to be more of that out there, but I read a lot of M/M which makes it easier to find lots of books with male MCs.

Sweet Snacks or Salty Snacks while Reading?

Believe it or not, I don’t snack much while reading. But I don’t have a big sweet tooth, so I prefer salty snacks in general :-)

Trilogies or Quartets?

Either one is fine with me. I just love series period, as long as they’re not too long. Three to five books is usually my preferred range because I like the types of series that have the same characters throughout with one big story arc that encompasses the whole thing. So anything over five books either doesn’t have any sort of big story arc end goal, or it often starts to drag.

First Person POV or Third Person POV?

Third person. I can like first person, but it’s so much harder to do well, and it often ends up sounding awkward and/or immature. Let’s put it this way, if a book is well-written, I won’t even notice what POV it’s in. If I’m actually noticing, that means the POV is drawing attention to itself and standing out in a bad way.

Reading at Night or in the Morning?

At night! For the same reason that I like reading in bed. It’s just quieter and darker and has less distractions. Plus I focus better at night. Really I just like doing everything better at night (except taking trash to the dumpsters—don’t do it, just take my word for it).

Libraries or Bookstores?

I don’t know. I rarely ever buy books, but I like to go to B&N and be surrounded by books. But I like the library for all the ebooks I get to read for free, but I have an awesome librarian who listens when I ask for books. If I have to choose, I’ll say library.

Books that Make You Laugh or Books that Make You Cry?

Books that do both! And yes, there are books I’ve read that have been both heart-wrenching and hilarious. Either one on its own is good too though. But if I have to choose one, then I choose books that make me cry. Emotion is what I like most in books.

Black Book Covers or White Book Covers?

Hmmmmmm… Even though black is my favorite color after red, I think white makes for prettier covers. It just looks so crisp and clean and makes the colors pop.

Brazen by Kelley Armstrong | reading, books
Unrivaled by Alyson Noel | reading, books
Banished Spirits by Jacinta Maree | reading, books
The Shadow Queen by C. J. Redwine | reading, books
Wicked Path by Eliza Tilton | books, reading

Character-Driven or Plot-Driven Stories?

Character-driven! But unless this is your first time visiting my blog, you probably already know that. I can easily love a slow-paced book or a book with very little plot if the character development is good enough, but the opposite is not true. I may somewhat enjoy a plot-driven book, but I’m not going to love it if it has very little character development.

I mostly at night as I’m too busy during the day, and I like relaxing in bed with a book. I’m not bothered whether it is male or female characters, trilogy or series as long as they are good! I prefer third person books as you can see what is happening to more characters. I never go to libraries because our local library never stocks anything I want to read. The snacking is both…I like having white chocolate and savoury biscuits or nuts to nibble as I read. I never go out my way to read funny books as I never seem to find them funny nor do I seek out books with upsetting themes. Anything I read needs to have a decent plot and good characters or I get bored.

Yeah, reading at night also helps me to relax. Although then I sometimes end up staying up too late because of it lol. And I agree, either gender and any length series is ok as long as it’s well-written! Sorry about your library though. I don’t seek out books about things like child abuse or something either since the emotion in those usually comes only from the situation, not the characters.

I prefer reading at night, too. I like getting all my chores done and then just being able to sit and relax. I love buying books, but I would choose my library over a bookstore. The books are free, and if I don’t like something, I don’t feel bad about not finishing it!

    1. Kristen Burns

Yeah, reading at night is relaxing. And exactly, I’d rather *go* to the bookstore and I like buying books when I can, but the library lets me read free ones!

I used to read a lot in bed, but nowadays I prefer the couch or I read at the table during breakfast and lunch. I mostly read Female main characters I think, I should be able to see that more closely at the end of the year as I am tracking that nowadays with my form. But I also like reading about male characters, but like you said there seem to be more female characters out there.

I either read during breakfast and lunch or I don’t snack at al. I do have a big sweet tooth, so I generally go for sweet snacks. I also like series in general, although I find long series a bit daunting to start.

I prefer first person point of view, but like you said if it’s well written I won’t notice the point, so that’s more important.

I am not surprised at all at your answer that you prefer to read at night and prefer character driven stories. I slightly prefer character driven stories, but I can really appreciate a good stroy driven book as well.

I agree that white covers do make the colors pop very nicely, although I’ve seen some good black covers as well. I prefer bookstores over libraries as I like the clean new book smell and somehow used books somehow gross me out a bit. Great tag! It was fun to read :).

I tend to read on the couch during the day, like while I’m waiting for food to cook or doing laundry. But my favorite is still in bed. From my stats last year, I think I read more female MCs, but I still like the guys! But yeah, you’ll be able to see at the end of the year :-)

I agree, long series are so daunting to start.

Lol you know me and my reading habits well! I think I used to prefer plot-driven in the past, so I can understand why you like them too. Sometimes they can still be good and well-written.

I’ve definitely seen good black covers as well. That was kind of a hard choice for me! For actually going there, I much prefer bookstores because library books honestly gross me out too. But I like that I get to read ebooks for free from my library :-)

    1. Kristen Burns

Haha, I’m good at multitasking, but not when both tasks require my hands and/or my eyes!

Lol but that’s one of the benefits of reading in bed, it helps me get relaxed and tired :-)

  4. Greg

Fun tag! I oddly enough seem to prefer female POV’s lately, although a good male POV is fine too. I like a good long series too as long as the author can keep the pace going. And while I read anytime I think I like reading at night too… something about when it’s quiet. :)

And bookstores for me! I could live at Barnes & Noble… although a good library is pretty special too. :)

White covers I think would be my preference too.

I can enjoy either POV, but I feel like I just tend to enjoy the male POV more. It’s kinda interesting how we don’t always prefer the POV of our own gender. And yeah, if a series is really good, I’ll be happy to keep reading it! The quiet of the night is awesome for reading :-D

Yeah, I just like being inside B&N. The problem is that I don’t have the money to actually buy stuff there lol.

White covers are just so pretty!

    1. Kristen Burns

Even with all the M/M I read, I still ended up reading about more female MCs last year. But oh that’s cool that you went to school to be a librarian! I never actually go to the library, but I love it exists and lets me read ebooks :-) And same, characters are most important to me!

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks :-) Idk, I like that reading in bed helps me get tired and fall asleep. But then other times the problem it gives me is that it keeps me up when I get sucked into a book lol.

  5. Becky @ A Fool's Ingenuity

I forgot I did this tag! How do you forget about tags? I do love a good tag where you don’t need to think of questions. I also tend to be the one where tags fizzle out and die because I never tag anyone else in it! I can’t believe you don’t have a sweet tooth, though! I have a major sweet tooth but sometimes my savoury cravings are strong and nothing else will satisfy. Love those covers as well. I think I just like pretty covers, why choose a specific colour?

  6. Kate @ Parchment Girl

I prefer reading in bed too. It’s so much cozier. Male vs. female protags…interesting question. I like both, but I strongly prefer tough-minded female protags and more emotional male protags. It’s much more interesting.

    1. Kristen Burns

It *is* cozier! I mean, if a character is well-written and the type of character I like, then I’ll like them regardless of gender. I just tend to find more male characters I like. And I do like the emotional ones!

  7. Marie @ Drizzle & Hurricane Books

Wow, I actually never thought about this until reading your post : “if a book is well-written, I won’t even notice what POV it’s in.” THIS HAPPENS TO ME too. I’m a third person POV lover, though, for the same reasons as you, but I definitely don’t notice in which person I am reading if the book is done well, I am just too lost into the book :)
Also, YES to emotions in books and YES to character-driven stories! We are twins ahha :D
    Great answers!

Glad it’s not just me who feels that way/has noticed that about first person POV but who can still enjoy it if it’s written well. It’s funny because I’ve read books and sworn they were in 3rd person and then opened them to find they were in 1st lol.

Yay twins! Emotional and character-driven books are the best!

  8. Dragonfly @ Our Familiarium

OH WE ARE SO ALIKE MY LOVE! :)

I read literally EVERYWHERE, in the car [passenger seat!], elevators, even walking LOL but yes, bed is my fav so bed for me, at night and with salty snacks! (maybe that’s why I have a few pounds I need to lose LOL)
    I don’t think I can choose between Male or Female. I guess I’m a bisexual reader ;-)

I like series and third person POV too. [OMG first person can be SO ANNOYING sometimes!! Yes immature is the right word] I’ll say library as well since I’m always on a tight budget. And yes cry, cry! Make me cry rivers please. AND BLACK IS MY FAV COLOR TOO!!! AND CHARACTER DRIVE PLEEEEASE No wonder we are blog wives!!! XOXO

Oh yes, I have always been an opportune reader and will read anywhere, but I still prefer my bed!

Lol, I guess we’re all bisexual readers then, but I have a preference for the menfolk :-P

Exactly, it sounds immature when it’s poorly written! I mean, my FAVORITE is red, but pretty much everything I wear and own and buy is black and I love it! I feel like most people don’t even think of black as a color that can be a favorite though!

  9. kris @ lemon-notes

YES TO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT OVER PLOT ALL THE WAY. I prefer plots to be moderately paced, but my preference for pacing goes completely out the window if the character development is good! We could sit and a room and do nothing for three hours over 500 pages if the character development is good. I love characters. loooooove ’em. Also, I HATE reading in bed! I’m a bit of an odd ball on that one. I just cannot get comfortable. I have been known to drop books on my face, so that doesn’t help. When I do read in bed, 99% of the time it’s because I’m reading an ebook :P

kris @ lemon-notes recently posted: WHY DUST JACKETS MAKE ME QUESTION MY ENTIRE EXISTENCE

    1. Kristen Burns

Exactly, I’m glad to find someone else who feels the same way about character/plot! Like, sometimes I am in the mood for fast pace, but I also have loved books that had slow pace and hardly any plot just because the characterization was amazing.

But noooo, reading bed is the best! See, I almost always read ebooks, so I don’t have to worry about uncomfortable positions trying to hold a book :-D

  10. Evelina

Ha, I also love plot driven stories the most :) I couldn’t choose between M and F characters though! As for reading times, I think it’s the late afternoon for me. I love the setting sun and the peace :)

I don’t know what it is about reading at night, but I prefer it as well. It’s somehow exciting to staying up all night to read! Which means I totally agree with you when it comes to reading in bed. Oh, and I like male protagonist’s too. I agree, when there are emotional parts, there seems to be a lot more deep and sweet to me. More meaningful.

I pretty much stay up all night anyway, haha. But I like the peace and quiet at night for reading. And yeah, male protagonist just seem to be written with better emotion for some reason!
