The Weekly Update: 7/23/17

Honestly I considered not even posting today because I’m tired and stressed, plus my arms are bad this week. But this was already half finished, so it seemed like a waste of arm pain to not just post it in case any of you are interested in what books I got/read over the past week.

Oh! I almost forgot, I watched Descendants 2. I thought the first movie was really silly and not very good, but I enjoyed this one. Visually, it was fantastic, what with all the colorful costumes and sets, as well as the dance choreographies. And the story and characters seemed better too. It was a fun movie. Plus, Thomas Doherty was fantastic as a sexy, swaggerific, slightly psychotic son of Captain Hook lol.

Blog/Bookish Updates:

Nothing this week.

Books I Received for Review:

A genderswapped, Dorian Gray inspired story with demons! From NetGalley.

Books I Finished:

When I get stressed out/upset/not feeling well/etc. I tend to read comics, so this was a webcomic-filled week (the first three are all webcomics). And the reading about uncommon supernatural being continues! Hotblood was about a centaur in the Old West. Teahouse was… rapey. And set off a lot of feminist alarm bells in my head. Did not like. Ninety-Nine Righteous Men was good! Word of warning though, don’t read it when you need a mood lifter. *SPOILER* My favorite character died at the end! šŸ™ *END SPOILER* And Sword of the King was great! Unfortunately I DNFed a book this week though, which I almost never do. But at 16% I still just couldn’t get into it, and there were some strange things irking me.

Song of the Week:

Nothing this week.

Laugh of the Week:

Nothing this week.

In Case You Missed It:

– I reviewed Graveyard Shift by Michael F. Haspil, a gritty UF about a mummy and vampires.
– I shared an update about my supernatural sims household.
– I reviewed Chaos Station by Kelly Jensen & Jenn Burke, an angsty m/m romance set in space.

I don’t have any webcomics recs I don’t think, the only one I’ve really read lately is Order of the Stick and that’s more of a gaming parody. I need some good ones too. yay for centaurs though! And in the old west… interesting. I haven’t been reading many comics either, and when I do it’s mostly on ComiXology, which I haven’t looked at in weeks lol. Oops.

    1. Kristen Burns

Yeah I probably wouldn’t understand the gaming one. I’m on the hunt for more webcomics though, so you’ll be sure to hear about it if I find a good one! I’m just hesitant to start incomplete ones because they often get left hanging.

Even though Descendants was such a weird baddish movie I was actually a bit charmed by it and the idea. So curious about the second one~ I hope this next week will be a lot better for you. <3

I’m glad I have posts drafted for this week already because I’m either getting a cold or have the worst allergies. I just want to curl up in a ball and hide.

here’s hoping for a better week ahead for you!

Ah, I actually want to see Descendants 2! We watched the first one randomly, and when I saw they were making a second, I was kinda excited!

  5. Evelina

Will & Temper has such a beautiful cover, wow :0 did you end up checking that webcomic I tweeted to you? Did you like it, if you did?

  6. sjhigbee

I’m sorry to hear you are tired and stressed and suffering:(. Does the hot weather aggravate your pain? I hope you feel better soon – in the meantime, I do like the sound of Creatures of Will & Temper… I’ll keep an eye out for your review! Take care.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks. I don’t think the weather affects me, I’m just stressed because I’m moving in two weeks. Don’t look too hard for my review, the book doesn’t come out until September or October so it’s still going to be a while!

I don’t read many webcomics (or any, really) but Hotblood really intrigues me! Centaurs in the old west? I want more! Teahouse sounds horrid. Do not want, indeed. I didn’t like the first Descendants movie either, but I may have to watch the second now that I know it’s such a marked improvement!

    1. Kristen Burns

Hotblood was interesting and had some really pretty art. But no, I do not recommend Tea House -_- I definitely recommend giving the second Descendants movie a try because I really did think it was better!

I am sorry to hear that you feel tired and stressed and your arm is hurting :(. I do always like to see what you read each week, so I am glad you still posted.

I used to read a lot of manga’s while I was in university as they were shorter and easy to pick up. They were a lot of fun. Nowadays I mostly stick to books though.

Sorry to hear about the DNF. It always makes me a bit sad when I have to DNF a book, but sometimes it’s for the best. I only had one DNF book this year so far i think.

I hope next week is a better one!

    1. Kristen Burns

      Thanks šŸ™‚

I really been in a comic mood a lot lately because sometimes they’re the only thing I can seem to focus on.

It does suck to dnf a book, but I do think it was for the best in this case.

      Thanks!

Oh Kristen – I’m sorry your arms have been so bad this week. šŸ™ That sucks.

I haven’t watched those movies but it’s nice to know that the second one was better and that you enjoyed it.

I hope that you have a better week this week.

  10. Barb (boxermommyreads)

Sorry you’re having a lot of pain this week. At least you found a good movie to watch. I received that book from Netgalley as well and am super excited to read it. It sounds really cool. Hope you have a better week!

Yay for gender-swapped retellings!! And omg i get the whole tired to do anything feeling! I started Postgrad recently and I think my professors are actually planning how they can kill us and turn us into ghosts in 2 years! I haven’t been able to get much done the past 2 weeks and I always feel like a cyclone hit me square in the face šŸ˜›

    1. Kristen Burns

There are not enough gender-swapped retellings out there! LOL no, please don’t die and turn into a ghost! I’m sorry you’ve been so tired too though.

  12. Becky @ A Fool's Ingenuity

Sorry to hear you’re not doing well today but I get what you mean, I will often force myself to finish a post when it’s practically all ready even if I would rather curl up and do nothing. No need to explain your reading, though, there are just some books (or comics) which work for us when we’re in certain moods. I tend to read romance when I need comfort because I am guaranteed a HEA. I also love rereads for comfort reading because I know exactly what happens. I don’t read many webcomics anymore, my brother did tell me to read Bad Machinery and that’s by the same guy who did Giant Days.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks šŸ™‚ oh, don’t worry, I wasn’t worried about being judged for the comics. Just explaining that I find them good to read when I’m having trouble focusing on anything else. I’ll have to check out bad machinery!
