The Weekly Update: 7/2/17

Remember I mentioned last week that I watched Captain Fantastic? Well, ever since watching it, I haven’t been able to shake this strange deja vu feeling. When the movie started, one of the actors looked familiar. I looked him up but hadn’t seen anything that he was in. I brushed it off and kept watching. Then it got to one point further into the movie, and I predicted something that was about to happen. Now, it wasn’t so crazy that I couldn’t have just guessed, but it didn’t feel like I guessed, it felt like I remembered. And then I started to feel like I had seen the movie before. And I feel like I remember watching it with one person in particular. Except the movie came out just a year ago, and there’s no way I saw it during that time, especially not with that person. I even asked her if she’d seen the movie just to make sure even though I knew it wasn’t possible. But it’s the strongest deja vu I’ve ever felt. What do you think, did I watch it with that person in an alternate reality and somehow *this me* and *that me* had some sort of brain meld and so I’m remembering something that happened to me in another reality? (I read too much sci-fi/fantasy lol, but that sounds like a good theory, right?)

Anyway, as for my tennis elbow… I think I’m doing a good job keeping up with comments with my new schedule and use of dictation, and I think I did return a visit to everyone’s Sunday Post who visited mine last week. But I’m just treating these Weekly Updates as regular posts for the time being. I’m not linking up with the Sunday Post because I feel like the point of a meme is lots of interaction and blog visits. So I totally understand that people sometimes comment on other blogs in a meme with the sole purpose of getting comments back. But my arms can’t handle that right now. I’d rather stick with those people who read my Weekly Updates because they like them and who will understand if I can’t always comment back 1:1 or if I end up commenting on a different post of theirs later in the week instead or something.

Blog/Bookish Updates:

I posted my first and only 5 star review of the year so far, but it got hardly any comments, and that makes me sad 🙁

Books I Received for Review:

The Storm Lords by Ravon Silvius
Eating the Moon by Mark David Campbell

Both from Dreamspinner. I think I really have been forgotten for that one book on NG though :-/

Books I Finished:

The Demon King and the Boy Who Hardly Knew Anything by Pat Ellis
Reaping Havoc by AJ Rose | reading, books

The Demon King was good but a little rough around the edges. Reaping Havoc was a realistic, sweet paranormal M/M reaper romance.

Song of the Week:

Nothing this week.

Laugh of the Week:

Nothing this week.

In Case You Missed It:

– I reviewed Toric’s Dagger by Jamie Edmundson, an epic fantasy with an intricate world and an interesting crew of characters.
– I shared book covers featuring clocks.
– I reviewed Chester 5000 XYV Vol. 2 by Jess Fink, a steampunk/lgbt/erotic webcomic/GN that totally blew me away and made me feel all the emotions!

The Sunday Post Link-Up:

Once again, I’m linking up to The Sunday Post at Caffeinated Book Reviewer 🙂

I'd love if you'd share your thoughts, too!

Ooh what if- you’ve switched with the alternate you and don’t know it? You’re an alternate and *you* is in another dimension? Or what if we move back and forth between realities- you watched it with that person when you were *over there* lol. Maybe that’s what deja vu is???

The Storm Lords and Eating the Moon- love both those covers.

Hope your tennis elbow is getting better.

Well I still have all my memories of this life, so I think I’m still me? But I totally believe now that alternate realities is the explanation for deja vu. Honestly I might’ve read that in a book and just subconsciously remembered it while writing this post lol. But it makes sense!

      Thanks!

      1. Greg

I’m convinced. 🙂 How cool would it be if we occasionally accessed memories from other us’s? It totally makes sense!

  2. Kei @ The Lovely Pages Reviews

That’s a nice theory on deja vu, I’ve had some strong ones over the year and even though I know there’s a scientific explanation it’s still creepy when it happens and you can basically “predict” the day.

Funny you mentioned it, I noticed the other day that I’ve only had 5 5-star books so far in the year which is probably the lowest ever. I don’t know if I’m getting extra picky or I’m reading books that aren’t THAT good.

    1. Kristen Burns

I haven’t read what the scientific explanation is. I’m gonna stick to my sci-fi one 😉

Oh my gosh, I just wrote a post… yesterday? about how it seems like I used to find more amazing books whereas now it’s kinda lots of “good” but not great. I’ll prob post that on Wednesday since I literally already forgot I wrote it and you just reminded me lol.

  3. Evelina

You’re totally doing a good job with the dictation, and I would still read these even if you didn’t comment or anything 🙂
Have a good reading week! And a good reading month as well. I don’t understand how June flew by like this :0

I recently had a few instances were an actor looked familiar because I had seen them in another movie. Like the actor that plays Newt in Fantastic Beast also plays a very different character in Jupiter Ascending and it’s always great when I can place that actor and recognize where we saw them before. But I don’t think I ever had such a strong deja vu about already having seen a movie while I hadn’t, usually in that case it’s a movie I saw as a kid and only remember parts. I do have deja vu moments at times, but there very short. I think there’s an explanation for why deja vu occurs, I remember shortly learning something about that during my study. Although it’s probably more fun to think it’s because of another reality.

I always link up my posts to the sunday posts and actually only visit back those who comment on my blog as I can’t keep up else. I don’t think you have to comment on everyone’s blog if you join a meme. Or maybe I have been doing it wrong for years. I usually do try and comment on the blog of the hosts at least.

I hadn’t made time yet to stop by your 5 star review, but will do so next. Strangely enough i also got very few comments on my 5 star review this week.

That’s too bad you still haven’t heard back about that one netgalley book. I’ve had a few of those books were I am sure I got forgotten. there was one book early this year that I never got approved or declined for and one later this year where I got declined like weeks later.

    Have a great week!

    1. Kristen Burns

I figured he looked familiar because I’d seen him in something else, but I looked it up, and I hadn’t :-/ I’ve never looked up the scientific reason, so Ima stick to my sci-fi theory 😛

I meant that if I link up, then I’m bound to get some of those generic comments from people who are only commenting so that I’ll comment on theirs, too, you know? And I totally understand that since I do feel that’s the point of a meme. I never understand when people join a meme but then don’t return comments to the bloggers who visit them. So I’m just saying I’d rather get less comments right now on my weekly updates but get them from the people who follow me or visit me regularly.

It always seems like the highest rated books that I’m most excited to share the reviews for get the least attention???

It really sucks to just be forgotten :-/ Like, maybe I would’ve gotten the book, you know? It makes me wonder how that’s possible though. Like, what the NG interface is like for publishers posting books that it’s even possible to forget requests. NG should fix that.

      Thanks, you too!

  5. Becky @ A Fool's Ingenuity

That’s really weird. Either your alternate reality theory is right or you’re just experiencing a whole heap of deja vu and it happens to be really weird.

I have to say I think you’ve been doing pretty well with comments and that considering your tennis elbow troubles. It’s really quite impressive. If folks aren’t sticking with you because you can’t comment as much that probably says something.

ANd I’ve been forgotten on Netgalley before until I get approved like a month later and it’s crazy because by that point I’ve normally forgotten about requesting. It’s cool though, you might get a surprise approval.

    1. Kristen Burns

I’m sticking to my theory 😉

I feel like my stats have gone down some? But that’s okay, I’m still getting enough interaction that blogging is still fun without being overwhelming.

It’s been over a month. And I’ve heard from other people that they actually have been completely forgotten and never heard back, and I fear that that is what has happened to me 🙁

  6. chucklesthescot

I did go on a car trip once with my parents and we deviated into a town where none of us had been before I was able to give exact directions to a garage to get petrol in the town centre. It was weird and it freaked us all out. I still don’t know how that happened as I was only ten and never went out in a car with anyone else. The mind is a strange thing…

  7. Olivia Roach

It must be such an uncanny feeling to feel like you’ve seen something before, especially with a particular person, but knowing it couldn’t have been possible either… Strange for sure D: Maybe you did in an alternate universe. Us readers know things like that can happen…

    1. Kristen Burns

It’s a really weird feeling, especially since I’ve never had deja vu this strong before. Right? When you read as much fantasy and science fiction as I do, you start to believe that these things might actually be possible!

  8. Barb (boxermommyreads)

Glad your elbow/arm is feeling better and that what you are doing is working for you. I always like seeing your weekly updates and totally understand if you can’t comment back. I just love it when you are able to visit my blog. I’ve had quite a few 5 star reads but I’ve been trying to save the rating for ones I really love. Hope you enjoy the week and get lots of good reading done. I just finished a really crazy and fun read and my review will be up tomorrow.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks 🙂 I’m extremely stingy with my 5-star reads I guess because I usually only get two or three in a year, though I do give a few more 4.5 start ratings which I round up to 5.

  9. Let's Get Beyond Tolerance

That’s so crazy about the deja vu! I don’t think I’ve ever had anything like that happen – well, I’ve had deja vu but nothing as intense as that.

I’m glad you’ve been able to find a way to blog with your tennis elbow!

    1. Kristen Burns

Lol at least that’s not freaky. I’ll tell you it is freaky though, I used to keep a sort of diary, and sometimes I’ll read back on something that happened but I won’t remember it at all or I’ll remember it differently. The memory is such a faulty thing.

  10. Molly @ Molly's Book Nook

haha Deja vu is weird. That sounds super creepy though to have it that strong! Maybe there is an alternate reality …. hmm…. I’m glad the new schedule and scaling back on blog hopping has helped your elbow! I haven’t really read anything or done much the past week. We celebrated 4th of July but that’s it. We are going to see Anthony Green perform on the 7th, though! I like him 🙂

    1. Kristen Burns

It really is weird to feel it that strongly! Thanks 🙂 It sounds like you had a relaxing week, at least? I don’t know if I’ve heard of him, but I hope you have fun!

  11. kris @ lemon-notes

OKAY SO you’re getting so totally Schroedinger’s Cat on me right now (there’s no way I spelled that right) and I’m not sure whether I like it or not?? Because I know myself and I absolutely know that I’m so incredibly prone to existential crises 😉 Maybe you from the future is trying to show your current self (your future self’s past self) something and totally bend the laws of time and change some weird outcome. Maybe they just wanted to giggle at you as you wrote this blog post. Okay, TOO FAR TOO META.

  12. Di @ Book Reviews by Di

Oooh – I have had a few instances of déjà vu lately – and weird sort of stuff too! Maybe not so much as yours…. But definitely been happening. Maybe the parallel universe in which we’ve ALL already done this before is a little closer than usual at the moment?

I’m glad that you’re managing to rest your elbow some. I didn’t even do a Sunday Post last week because I just didn’t have time to both sort out a post OR get around to any blogs so I took a complete tech break instead. It was pretty cool!

Anyways, I hope you’ve been having an awesome week and I’ll try to keep up a little more. I’ve been terribly busy the past couple of weeks and my blogging and reading have taken a massive hit. Thankfully I’d lined up a few posts in advance last week but those all ran out so this week has been a ‘barely there’ kind of blogging scene. 🙂

    1. Kristen Burns

Oh I like that addition to the theory that maybe the parallel universe is closer at the moment!

Thanks 🙂 sometimes it’s good to take a break! But I hope you can get back to blogging soon 🙂

  13. Ioana

For the deja vu feeling I totally belive the alternate reality theory. Maybe it’s some kind of Mandela effect (if…this is how that even works…we don’t really have the Bearensten Bears here to compare lol). Or maybeee…it has something to do with the old predictible plot of the movie ?? (or maybe it’s just me that thinks that about the movie don’t mind mee)
