Bookish Musings: My 2018 Bookish Goals

Ok, so, I’m using the word “goals,” but these aren’t things I’m forcing myself to do out of some obligatory feeling; these are things I want to do, things that will make me happy if I do them. But I like to have these “goals” written down as a reminder since it’s easy to be led astray by all the shinies out there! So, well, here they are 🙂

Stop Worrying about the Numbers

I realized last year that this whole numbers thing was making me hesitant to read certain things that I wanted to read simply because they wouldn’t “count” or because they were long and would take a while to get through. And it was stressing me out trying to figure out how to count things like webcomics and short series extras and whatnot. Basically, the number goal was making me worry about a whole bunch of really stupid stuff instead of just reading what I want to read and enjoying it. So this year I’ve set my goal to one book, and I will read what I want and mark it down on Goodreads however is easiest or available (if it’s available at all), and that will be that!

Read More Books about Uncommon Supernatural Creatures

Each year I manage to read a few, but it’s never enough! The problem is that they’re hard to find, and then the ones I do find often just don’t seem like a book I’m going to love, so I don’t want to waste my time and money. But I keep looking!

Read More Books with Physically Disabled Characters

So it turns out there are actually quite a few SFF book with physically disabled characters out there! Not a ton, but more than I originally thought when I started making my list (which you can find in the menu at the top). Now I just have to read them! Well, not all of them since some just don’t sound like my kinda book, but some of them are on my TBR.

Read Through The Vampire Chronicles

I honestly thought, when I reread Interview, that I wouldn’t like it, and that would be it. But I liked it! And now I’m itching to reread the entire series as well as finally get to the most recent ones that I haven’t ever read. I finished the first three last year. That leaves ten more, I think. Will I accomplish that in one year? Maybe not, since they’re kind of long and slow-paced and not the kinds of books I can binge-read. Will I get sick of the series at some point and stop? Possibly. But for now, I’m excited to keep reading.

Stop Reading So Many Books that I Know I’m Going to Mildly Like but Not Love

It’s a real problem, guys. I do this a lot. But, number one, sometimes it’s hard to know! Like, some of my absolute favorite books were ones I was unsure about. And number two, oftentimes a book will have one aspect that I’m really interested in that’s hard to find, like the aforementioned uncommon supernatural creatures, and so I read it simply because my options are limited. *sigh* Honestly I don’t foresee myself succeeding at this goal.

Actually Discuss Books with People

I actually have a discussion post about this coming up at some point. But the gist is, I rarely get to actually discuss the books I’ve read. Even if other people I know have read the same ones, it’s usually still, “I agree, great review!” “Thanks, same to you!” So if anyone happens to read any of the same books I’ve read and wants to chat about them or a particular character or anything, send me a message! (Shout-out to my girl Kazza @ On Top Down Under for the book chats we’ve had! Mostly about the Thieves series because of course lol.)

Do More Writing

I did a bit last year, but I’d like to do a lot more! Now if I can just get past all the indecision and brainstorming and the way my brain complicates every idea I come up with…

Read the Older ARCs I Have

I feel bad because these authors probably think I forgot about them or duped them just to get a free book. To be honest, there are a few I’ve lost interest in, but I do still plan to read most of them! Mood reading is just a real problem sometimes.

2018 Discussion Challenge

2018 Discussion Challenge

I love discussion posts, so I love this challenge! It’s hosted by Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction and Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight. I’ll go for the Creative Conversationalist level, which is 11-20 discussion posts. I’d like to try and do a discussion every other week or so.

Keep Blogging

I’ve been going strong for over two years; hopefully at this time next year I’ll be able to say the same, but with the number three!

Your bit about numbers is a good point. I know I worry about things — things that in the grand scheme of things shouldn’t matter to being a reader. Good reminder, Kristen!

  2. Amber Elise @ Du Livre

I have such a hard problem with reading books I know I’ll love. I easily get caught up in the moment and fall for buzzwords then have a mediocre reading experience.

I wish you all the positive vibes and luck in 2018!

    1. Kristen Burns

It IS so easy to read those kind of ok books. Whether cuz of hype or a comparison or one aspect that sounds good or it’s free. I need to work on that!

      Thank you, same to you!

  3. Olivia Roach

I really like your goals! I’m trying to work on my writing a bit more this coming year as well, and I like the sound of discussing books. Discussions and talking to people about things you’ve read or have in common is always so much fun! It’s one of the things I really like about blogging. I also think not worrying about the numbers is always a good thing. It takes time to learn that and get over it, but once you do, it’s really relieving 🙂 Hope you can achieve all of these goals in the coming year!

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! Hopefully we’ll both get more writing done. Yes, I love actually discussing books! It’s just so hard to actually do for some reason, and I don’t know that many bloggers who even read the same books as me. I got caught up in the numbers when I started blogging, but hopefully this’ll be the year I get past that and simply enjoy reading 🙂 Thanks!

  4. chucklesthescot

I had to make that decision in the last few years too-read only what I’m really interested in. Time is too short and there are so many new reads in my favourite genres to download stuff I might never get to. I’m definitely having to be more selective! I don’t want to get stressed with my reading either but I do have some hefty goals set. I don’t expect to meet them all but if I can make good headway on each and have it keep me motivated, I’ll count that as a win. I think it’s good that you’re deciding to read what you want and count what you want in your challenges…I know it was giving you hassles!

This year I want to read more, enjoy my reading, keep up with all my challenges, visit more blogs and be less stresses. Not sure how I’ll do with all that!!!

    1. Kristen Burns

I’ve been trying to be more selective, it just never works lol. I get drawn in by one aspect of the book or the fact that it’s free. Goals can definitely be motivating! Especially if you don’t get super strict about them but just use them to guide you. But yeah, I feel good about my decision to set my GR goal to one and try and stop worrying about those numbers, it was giving me hassles.

Sounds great, I hope you accomplish all of that!

  5. Wendy @ Birdie Bookworm

Oh man, Kristen! I may be stealing your idea to set your goal for 1 book. I have SUCH a problem with the Goodreads challenge. It always eats away at me if I’m behind. It hasn’t been as much of a problem since I started Birdie Bookworm, but still. It would be nice to not even think about it. I tried not setting a goal one year, but they don’t have a button to decline and get it off your dashboard. It just stands there and haunts you, asking for a dang goal!

I LOVE discussing books! I always want to leave a comment talking about the specifics of a book, but then I worry about leaving a spoiler in the comment section of a review, so I refrain. Now I’ll be sending you private messages all the time. 😀

    1. Kristen Burns

Go ahead! I stole it from someone else, haha. I think it was the right choice, I feel good about it. They really should have a button to decline though!

Gah, me too! Ok next book we read in common, one of us is going to be messaging the other lol.

      1. Wendy @ Birdie Bookworm

I almost messaged you the other day. I finished Immemorial Year and saw you’d read it and liked it too. That series was so good! I can’t believe it hasn’t gotten more notice, or that TJ has decided not to continue to the series. Such a shame!

I ended up setting my Goodreads Goal for 52. One book a week is simple. 🙂

        1. Kristen Burns

I LOVED that series! You should message me! Right now! Or I will just DM you! Lol. Ok I prob don’t remember the details of everything, but I remember enough! It was a shame that he decided not to continue :-/ But I can understand. And since he brought the story to a satisfying enough conclusion, didn’t leave us w/ a cliffhanger or something, I could deal with it.

One book a week is a good, simple goal 🙂

          1. Wendy @ Birdie Bookworm

It was a good conclusion for an ending, but he did leave enough open that I was really really hoping for more! Really though, I’d just love more of Cavalo and Lucas! (Plus, SIRS!!) Man, I loved those books. 😀

            1. Kristen Burns

I agree, I would love more too, I’m just saying it’s good he at least closed the ending enough to be satisfying. Some authors drop series in the middle and just leave everyone hanging.

  6. Karen

I made folders for novellas and graphic novels etc on Goodreads but I’m really bad at keeping track of that sort of thing by the year. I mostly mark it read and be done with it lol

I had to stop looking at blog stats a few years ago because I felt like it was dictating my reading. Like which book would be more popular to review? But then I was hating reading and blogging and needed to let it go if I was going to continue. I’ve lost page views/followers for sure, but gained more followers that actually like to interact so it’s a win for me.

    Love all your *goals*

    For What It’s Worth

    1. Kristen Burns

For the past couple years I’ve had a shelf for “read-2017-books” and “read-2017-shorts” so that I could keep track of the shorter things but not add them to my read count by just not putting a date. I don’t think I’m going to bother with that this year though because of my whole screw the numbers thing. It’s too much work!

I’ve been good about not letting blog stats dictate my reading. I don’t choose books based on what other people might want to read reviews for. I’ve accepted that my blog will never be one of the popular ones because of all the self-pub/indie I read. But I was choosing somewhat based on what would count on GR and how quickly I could read it and add another book read and whatnot. But it just makes reading less fun when we let anything other than our own moods dictate our reading, so go us for moving past these things!

      Thanks 🙂

  7. L

It sounds like you have a lot of goals for the year! Good luck! You should always blog for yourself and read what makes you happy. Don’t worry about numbers and how what you’re doing will be perceived. Your blog is an extension of yourself, so your thoughts and feelings matter the most.

Also, you said you wanted to read more books with characters that have a disability… well, I stumbled across this today on another blog and it looks really good. I think you’d like it. It’s called The Hound by Simon Butters. (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30370600-the-hounded?from_search=true)

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! Exactly. I never really worried about what others would think, it was more like I was in a competition with myself with the numbers. So I’m gonna focus more on simply reading what I want and not worrying about that this year 🙂

Thanks for letting me know, I’ll check it out!

  8. Daniela Ark

yay more writing! I can’t wait! The “New” i posting poetry and all LOL Sorry to say this but I really really don’t see you want to see you succeeding at not reading books you know you won’t LOVE either! I think your like to finish books [which is a GREAT quality to have, the best if you ask this DNFer! 🙂 ] BUT you will succeed in the others because of the same reason! you are determined! 🙂

    1. Kristen Burns

Well, I *want* to do more writing, but we’ll see if that actually happens lol. Well, my goal isn’t about DNFing more books because I know I will not be doing that lol. I do like to finish books. I just need to stop starting books in the first place that I know will probably just be ok. But hopefully my other goals will be more attainable, haha. Thanks for your faith in me! XD

  9. Let's Get Beyond Tolerance

I definitely hope you keep blogging! I love talking about books with people – it helps that my sister often likes the books I like, though she doesn’t read nearly as quick as I do. haha Yay for joining the discussion challenge. I did too and I hope to do a lot more discussion posts this year – on both blogs, but probably more here: http://www.shootingstarsmag.net.

    -Lauren

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! <3 It's great when you actually find someone to discuss specific books with. The discussion challenge is a great one! I'll have to make sure I'm following your other blog on Feedly so I won't miss the discussions 🙂

  10. Wattle

Good luck reaching your goals (I keep typing reading instead of reaching and it is starting to drive me crazy).

I kind of love that you’ve set your goal to one book, no pressure at all! I always freak out at the end of the year about my goal, and it really is a stupid reaction to a thing you set because Goodreads suggests it.

I don’t think I really discuss books either. I tend to read things everyone else is well past though, or….this is a problem – I don’t post about books I’ve read and then forget about them 🙁

I’m looking forward to reading more of your discussion posts! They are always interesting reads.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! Lol I have days like that where my fingers just keep typing the wrong thing for some reason.

I’m glad I decided to go with that! I think setting it to one book was the push I needed to, like, prove to myself that I can do this, that I can stop worrying about the numbers, if that makes any sense.

Yeah, there are so many reasons why it’s hard to actually discuss books :-/

Thanks! I kinda slowed up on them for reasons, but hopefully I’ll manage to do at least one every other week this year 🙂

  11. Greg

More supernatural creatures of the uncommon variety *nods* Same here although last year was a fail lol. Maybe this year I’ll do better. Hope you have success with that- and the rest too of course. Actually discussing books is another good one- I’ve also found that review comments (while they’re great, don’t get me wrong, but there’s usually not a huge amount of actual discussion). I mean not always. And of course spoilers complicate things. But I’ve felt that way a few times too. I’m thinking of doing more spoilery discussions for those books I really want to talk about.

Good luck with the writing too!

    1. Kristen Burns

I feel like I never do well enough with that goal. Maybe this’ll be be the year. Or maybe if I keep this goal every year, it will eventually add up to enough books lol. I completely agree, I love comments on reviews, but they’re not very conducive to actual, in-depth discussion. Even including spoilers wouldn’t work for me since the majority of my followers haven’t read the book I’d be posting about. But spoiler discussions could work for popular books!

      Thanks 🙂

  12. Lola

I also set a few goals for this year, but just like you there are more things I would to accomplish than really obligatory. I know I also worried about short stories and such on Goodreads and how they should count. Nowadays I just mark everything I read and have it count even tough it’s only 15 pages, like a picture book I read this year. As it’s still nice to have it show up at the end of the year for books I read.

I also don’t seem to read a lot about uncommon creatures, but I guess there’s a reason they’re uncommon. I think the least common thing I read about this year were shamans, oh and a dark fantasy book i read that had something they called pheatyn. So I am sure you did at least better than me. But it will be interesting to see which creatures you find to read about this year.

I totally get what you mean with reading books you know you’re not going to love. I pick up a lot of those too for various reasons, but sometimes those are the books that can take you totally by surprise in a good way. My last 5 star book was one I thought would be a good that would be just okay or if I was lucky receive a 4 star and then it blew me away. But most of those type of books aren’t ones I love or really impress me. I actually dropped out a few ARC teams for that reason, I liked the books and knew I would continue to like them, but they didn’t impress me as much as I would’ve liked.

I wish I knew more people who read the same books as I do and discuss them. I liked that i read Starflight this year and actually knew a few other bloggers who had read it. But most of the time I read all these indie books and no one has read them or for some reason I still can’t get into an in depth discussion about it. I had some great talks with my sister about books I recommended to her that i had read already and then after she read them we talked about them. It’s so fun to discuss books that way.

I hope you get more writing done this year! I liked that ice cream story you once shared here, not sure what the title was, but I remember they ate ice cream. I also want to get some older ARC’s read, I am trying to remove the ones I lose interest in and then hopefully get around to actually reading the ones I do still want to read. It’s an ongoing struggle with the new books I receive and moodreading. I hope you succeed with most of your goals this year!

    1. Kristen Burns

Exactly, it’s nice to have goals but not to the point that you stress about them. I think reading will be much simpler when I’m not worrying about what I should count on GR! And yes, it’ll be nice to have it all show up in one place, although actually everything I read still won’t be there since I sometimes read webcomics and stuff that aren’t on GR. Oh well, that’s what my own chart is for!

Lol yeah, the uncommon ones are hard to find. The book I’m currently reading is about a shaman! Not quite sure what that is though or, like, how it differs from mages/sorcerers/magic users? Well, I’m actually really happy that I have already made progress on this goal since my first book of the year had goblins 🙂

The stop reading books I know I won’t love is going to be my hardest to stick to, I think.

You and me, we both read a lot of self-pub, so we both have this issue of no one reading the same books as us :-/ And then yeah, even when I do read the same books, it’s like it’s still so hard to have an actual discussion? But it really is fun when you actually get to discuss. Like, even if you disagree about something, it’s just great discussing period!

Thanks! I don’t even remember the title either, haha, but yes, it had ice cream. Maybe we’ll both get to more older ARCs this year! It is a struggle with mood reading. Thanks, same to you!

  13. Karen Blue

I am with on re-reading The Vampire Chronicles. I need to get back to this series. I remember disliking The Tale of the Body Thief but I will re-read it anyways just so I can have it reviewed on my blog. Lol! You got some great goals set up. Good luck with all your goals in 2018!

    1. Kristen Burns

Yes, I need you to be my Vampire Chronicles reading partner! Lol. My review for Book 3 goes up tomorrow. Not sure when I’ll get to Body Thief. I don’t remember much about that one other than he trades bodies with a human. Did you get to Book 3 or Interview yet? I don’t want to miss your reviews! Thanks 🙂

  14. Cheryl Malandrinos

Good for you not being worried about numbers. I decided that a few years ago and it was very freeing. I host authors I want to host. I read what I want to read. I’m at the point where I have the books I’ve promised to review in one place, so I know which ones I have to hold onto. I’m going to go through the rest and read the blurbs. If they no longer interest me, they are getting donated to the library’s book sale.

  15. Barb (boxermommyreads)

All your goals sound awesome and most importantly, have fun. I just read a book called “Blood Sisters” and it has a MC with a traumatic brain injury. A lot of the chapters are from her POV and feature her knowing what she wants to say and tell people, but not being able to do so. I don’t know if this is what you’re looking for but thought I would mention it.

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! Having fun is what I’m trying to do with my reading this year 🙂 Oh, thanks for the rec! But I think I just found it on GR and it’s not SFF, so prob not quite for me.

  16. Chauncey Rogers

Those look like great goals! I really liked your goal to read about uncommon supernatural animals. I’ve been reading quite a few goal posts lately (obviously), and I haven’t seen a goal quite like that one anywhere else. I’ll be curious about what books you come up with!
I actually read a SFF novel recently that had a disabled MC. It was okay. She didn’t stay disabled, exactly. She had twisted legs and couldn’t walk, but a faery gave her some magic shoes that would straighten her legs, but only when she wore them. As you can probably guess, she spent most of the book with the shoes on. It was called “Unraveled.”

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! That’s been a goal of mine for a couple years now, but I never find enough books lol. Ugh, I get so frustrated by books that give the character a disability and then essentially cure it. Not good rep. Thanks for telling me about it though! I might still add it to my list. If you come across others, feel free to let me know !

  17. Laura

Great goals! And I can definitely relate to the numbers thing! I’m always quite hesitant to read longer books now because it’ll probably mean reading fewer books, but I should really just forget about that and read what I want to read.
Happy New Year, and best of luck with your goals! 🙂

    1. Kristen Burns

Thanks! I kept being hesitant to read longer books too, but there are some that I want to read, so hopefully I’ll be able to stop worrying about that this year and just enjoy them 🙂 Happy New Year!

  18. Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction

The point of discussing books is why I LOVE my spoiler-filled discussions of the Three Dark Crowns Series. I keep thinking I should do this with other books as well (especially series, where you’re waiting to see what’s going to happen next), but somehow I haven’t managed it. That should be a goal of mine for next year!

    1. Kristen Burns

That only works with popular books though, and I don’t read a lot of popular books! I am going to find some people to discuss books with damn it lol.

  19. Annemieke

Great goals Kristen. If we read same books I shall do my best to leave a comment that is more than great review. I always struggle with commenting on reviews so often times I skip them. X_x

    1. Kristen Burns

Nah, this is my third year doing the discussion challenge. It doesn’t help with that because I talk about ideas, general topics, not specific books, so that everyone is able to join in. Still fun though 🙂 Thanks!

  20. Lilyn George

I have a feeling we don’t read much of the same type of books, but if you’re ever wanting to discuss a YA sci-fi book like Illuminae or something, feel free to poke me on Twitter (@scifiandscary). I *love* to discuss books.

    1. Kristen Burns

I do read more fantasy than sci-fi, but I was just checking out the list of your reviews on your site, and we have read some of the same books! (Saga, Hell Divers, Warm Bodies) So maybe we will get a chance to discuss books 🙂

      1. Lilyn George

I have the second book in the Warm Bodies series to read still (it was an unsolicited send by the publisher). I’ve started on it, and it seems interesting enough. I’m just not sure R is an interesting enough character to carry another book, you know?

        1. Kristen Burns

To be honest, although I did like Warm Bodies, I just felt it was slow and haven’t been interested in sitting through another book in the series. Not sure if it’s because of R or what.

          1. Lilyn George

It was a slow read. I enjoyed it because it was different than I expected and I liked the ideas that the author was working with, but it wasn’t an “Oh my god! This was fantastic!!”

Burning World, from what I’ve read so far, does seem to be moving things along a bit faster. Definitely some tension between the living and the, erm, sorta living.

I think the whole series just focuses too much on the emotional drama and discovery side of things. I’m more of the type that when you tell me zombies are involved, I expect to hear squicky nomming sounds.

            1. Kristen Burns

Yes, it was unique and creative and, I thought, poignant, but not the greatest book I’ve ever read. I’ve heard Burning World is better and been told I should try it, but gah, it just feels like I’d be forcing myself since I really don’t feel the urge to read it. But sometimes second books in a series surprise me.

I liked the emotional drama and discovery, I actually love zombies as main characters, and this is the only one I’ve read where the zombie MC was part of a zombie apoc rather than necromancy or something, but it did need a bit more action or intensity. Idk, if Burning World is faster-paced, I may still have to consider reading it.

  21. The Orangutan Librarian

I totally relate about stressing over the numbers- I really need to do that less. And that’s a great idea about looking for more books on unusual supernatural creatures 😀 And gosh I totally relate about reading books that I know I’m not gonna be totally in love with and will probably be meh about at best. Lovely goals!

    1. Kristen Burns

Yeah the supernatural creatures thing has been one of my goals for years. It’s fun! Yes, I seriously need to get pickier with books and stop reading so many of the ones I know will be meh! Thanks 🙂

  22. Becky @ A Fool's Ingenuity

Yay for good reading goals. These are some totally understandable ones. I know I want to read books and not worry about numbers. I’ve never stressed about Goodreads reading goal before though so I don’t think that should bother me this year either. I know what you mean about still not getting to discuss books even when you review them. I think the best thing for that (for me) is buddy reads. Sometimes you get lucky and have a good chat with someone on a review but buddy reads basically force you to chat because you’re reading together.

    1. Kristen Burns

Yeah it looks like I have a lot of goals, but they all kind of overlap and don’t even have set numbers, so they’re not the stressful kind of goals. And if you can set a GR goal w/o stressing, that’s great! I guess I didn’t really stress over my GR goal, but, at the same time, I was still hesitant to read long books and stuff because I wanted my numbers *higher*. Setting my goal to one was just kind of my way of motivating myself to stop thinking in terms of numbers. Idk, I can’t do buddy reads because of my mood reading and because I don’t like having to read at a certain pace? But there have been times when I read the same book at the same time as the blogger I mentioned and so yeah we got to discussing. So it does help when you read the book at the same time.

  23. Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight

I feel you with the numbers thing! I still do it, unfortunately- think “hmm should I read this long book? What about Goodreads?” Which of course is ridiculous, so I love your resolution! I also have the same problem with reading books I am not sure I’ll love- and same as you, some of my faves are ones I was hesitant about! I clearly cannot be trusted, so I guess I have to keep reading the mediocre ones too 😉 And YAY I am so glad you’ll be joining the challenge again! It makes me smile 🙂

    1. Kristen Burns

Exactly! That’s what I was doing too, so I’m trying to break out of that way of thinking. And ugh, idk. I mean, sometimes those books do surprise us. But I still feel like I need to be a little better about choosing books? Choosing books to read is so hard! #bookwormproblems I love the discussion challenge, glad you guys keep hosting it!

  24. Fanna

I totally agree with not picking up books that I might be quite sure I won’t love, like I would like them but not actually love them. It would make the whole reading thing so much fun and less guilty because writing negative reviews is always the tough part.

Writing more is one of mine, too, though I don’t think I’m fairing well in it for this month but let’s see, haha. Good luck with that and I genuinely hope you can get all those creative stories down on the paper 😀

Discussing books is sadly, so uncommon, even in the bookish world itself, I kinda feel sad. I agree on what you said. More often than not, people don’t even read that many reviews (even bookworms) and if they do stumble upon one that they have already read, they would ‘agree’ to it and that’s it. I want more of those excited exclamation mark filled chats with people about the books we commonly enjoyed. Thanks for mentioning this since it’s something I’ll be looking out for this year, now onward 😀

    Lovely post, Kristen!

Yeah, and it’s also just like, I could’ve spent that time reading a GREAT book instead, you know?

I’m not doing well either with the writing lol. Thanks, same to you!

I really do want more discussions. But I’ve actually gotten some people to DM me and chat on Twitter! So if you know people who’ve read the same books, that works well!

      Thank you 🙂
