Cover Characteristics: Book Covers featuring Wolves

Wolves was a fantastic cover topic for me because you all know I like to stick to sci-fi/fantasy covers when possible, and guess what genre has LOTS of wolves in it? That’s right, urban fantasy! All those werewolves and shifters and whatnot. And though I admittedly am not a big fan of reading wolf or shifter books, that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the heck out of their gorgeous covers 😉

Cover Characteristics is a weekly meme hosted at Sugar & Snark. This week’s topic is:

I LOVE the Shawn Underhill covers! I always enjoy looking at wolf covers because I’m fascinated by these animals. PNR has great wolf covers but I can’t read them because of the overdose of sex in them! I’d love to add more wolf covers to my collection but most of the plots don’t appeal which is frustrating!

Yeah, wolves can be beautiful animals. I can see your issue with trying to find some werewolf books that aren’t just romance and sex. I actually have a werewolf book review coming up this week, oddly enough lol, and it almost seems like one you might like since it had no romance, except the first book in the series is vampires, and I’m not sure you’d like that one.

Oh you’re right these are some seriously gorgeous covers. I don’t read much about werewolves/shifters but these do make me want to change that. Great choices.

  3. Lark @ The Bookwyrm's Hoard

Nice choices! I particularly like the covers for Girl in the Red Hood, Wolves of the Northern Rift, and the Patricia Briggs covers. Oh, and Wolf’s Clothing, too. I knew there would be a lot of UF and PNR covers today, so for variety, I went in a different direction and looked for YA & children’s books (mostly.)

Wolves! No idea why I didn’t do this one. I mean wolves! Anyway Becoming Alpha is one of my favorites, and Wolves of the Northern Rift as well (love her red hair against the white of the snow). Daughter of the Wolf is nice as is Hunting Ground. Silver-White is interesting w/ the mirror. Apparently I like half the pics lol. Great choices! 🙂

  5. Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight

I had no idea there were so many wolf covers! I don’t think I could have found one, even if I tried. This is most impressive! I really like Girl in the Red Hood, that is my favorite- it’s pretty, but still… wolfy. I don’t think that’s a word, but shhh. Wolves of the Northern Rift is really pretty too!

There’s just something about wolves that I love, and yet I haven’t read any form of UF lately or even anything with shifters in it!

I love the cover for Bitten and the Alpha girl series covers are awesome too. I think the one that most caught my eyes in the line up though was Silver-White.

  7. Cyn @ Bookmunchies

I think wolves are a bit of a hit or miss with me on covers. Sometimes if done wrong, they just look so corny. But the ones you chose definitely look amazing! The Patricia Briggs ones are probably my favourite!

Wolves are such bad asses!! My youngest was at a birthday party the other day and the birthday was obsessed by wolves, all these wolf related gifts kept appearing.

  9. kris @ lemon-notes

Wolf’s Clothing has such a STUNNING COVER DESIGN OMG. That’s such a lovely cover. I’m dead.

Complete sidebar, but I always wanted a wolf as a companion. I still do. Or a fox. Maybe I should just open a shelter for animals but keep them all instead?

    1. Kristen Burns

I’m so glad someone else loves that cover too!

Lol I’ve never wanted a wolf, but a fox would be cool! I say go for it. I’ll keep your secret of the real motivations behind your shelter 😉

  10. Dragonfly @ Our Familiarium

Wolves are my favorite after Crows for book covers! I’ll have to go with the Wolves of the Northern Rift because they remind me of the Direwolves of GoT and I’m deep into GoT fangirling until the final season stars July 17th 🙂

          1. Dragonfly @ Our Familiarium

Sorry baby. No divorce allowed here. We are like PNR books shifters and Vamps. “Mated for life” LOL! [without the controlling jealousy 🙂 ]
But seriously speaking now… I think you may like GoT a lot. 🙂

            1. Kristen Burns

I don’t think that’s a vampire thing lol. But eh, idk, I’m just not big into epic fantasy books, and I feel like I probably wouldn’t be that into the shows either.

I am a big fan of shifter and wolves stories, so I see a lot of those pretty covers. There are a lot of great covers with wolves or animals on them, although there are also some wolf images almost everyone seems to use.

Nice list of covers! I see two books I DNF’d in between here. Alpha and Silver White as well i think. I can’t remember much of them, but they weren’t for me. the covers though are lovely! Those Patricia Briggs covers are great too.

That cover for Bitten is great! I like how the eyes of the man and wolf are so similar and I like the glowy quality about it. That probably would be my favorite of these.

    1. Kristen Burns

Yeah, you do seem to read a lot of shifter stories. I don’t pay enough attention to notice what wolf images everyone uses though LOL.

Aww that’s too bad you DNFed those, they have such gorgeous covers!

I agree, that cover for Bitten is gorgeous!

  12. Laura

I really like the ones with the pops of red, particularly Girl In the Red Hood! And I think the wolf looks really pretty on Snow Rising 🙂
I always remember a book I loved as a kid with a really cool wolf cover. It was The Sight by David Clement-Davies and just had a super close up of a white wolf’s face. It was actually a really good book too to say it had almost no human characters at all, and was all about wolves (I was in my Watership Down phase where I loved animal books!) 🙂
