Cover Characteristics: Book Covers featuring Big Ben

It was a lot easier to find covers with Big Ben on them than you would think it would be, even when sticking mostly to sci-fi and fantasy. I mean, I knew this would be a topic at some point, so I started bookmarking any covers I stumbled on with Big Ben, so that made it easy when it came time to make the post, but still, there are more out there than I would’ve thought!

Anyway, I’ve never been to London or England or even Europe, so I don’t really have anything to say about Big Ben. So I’ll just stop talking now and let you enjoy the pretty covers!

Cover Characteristics is a weekly meme hosted at Sugar & Snark. This week’s topic is:

Supernatural Freak Series by Louisa Klein

The book itself was too much on the chick lit side for my tastes, but the covers are still pretty!

Inconceivable by Tegan Wren

I’ve always thought this cover was pretty in an artsy way. I’ve also always just liked collages, and that’s what it looks like.

The Jekyll Revelation by Robert Masello

This one isn’t particularly exciting, but it does set a tone, and I like how the worn, dirty look of the font matches the rest.

Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

There are about a million covers for Peter Pan, but I didn’t feel like going through all of them. These two will have to suffice šŸ˜›

The Ruby Red Trilogy by Kerstin Gier

Sapphire Blue by Kerstin Gier | reading, books, books covers, cover love, big ben
Emerald Green by Kerstin Gier | reading, books, books covers, cover love, big ben

These are just pretty, and I kind of want all of her dresses.

City of Fae by Pippa DaCosta

This one is bright and eye-catching, plus the colors make for nice contrast.

The Heartless City by Andrea Berthot

Even though I loved the original cover for this book, this new one has grown on me. It’s pretty, and I like the worn, historical feel.

The Carnival Keepers by Amber Gulley

This one is so, like, *SPLASH*! Did that make sense to anyone else? I like the colors and the whole design.

Surviving the Evacuation: London by Frank Tayell

I like how you can tell it’s a zombie book, and it’s got that dreary, apocalyptic look, but it’s also pretty and uses a cool perspective with the sign in the foreground and whatnot.

My Favorite:
Incarnation by Emmma Cornwall

Honestly, I’m not sure I have a favorite for this topic? But I have always loved this cover. Her outfit is just FANTASTIC, and I love how the red stands out against the blue, and it all looks professional and nice.

City of Fae is my favorite hands down. Love that cover. She’s got a lil sassy look and the background and coloring- just all works. I like the Rock Paper Books version of Peter Pan next probably (all those covers rock), and Emerald Green because green and the way the cityscape in the background is all like framing the sky, and the crescent moon.

I like London too with Evacuees crossed out lol. Incarnation is nice though, with her red hair and dress and the background- almost looks like a steampunk?

    1. Kristen Burns

Lol I didn’t notice the sassy look. I was torn between using Peter Pan or Sherlock Holmes since I love both of those Rock Paper Books covers.

The London one is kinda plain, but idk, I like it. I have no idea what genre Incarnation is lol. Looks either steampunk or Victorian or something.

      1. Greg

I like the Sherlock Holmes one! Have you looked at their whole line? They’re all prett nice. I’m looking for excuses to use more of their covers down the line lol.

I have always liked the cover for Incarnation and for some reason, I’m also drawn to The Carnival Keepers – it totally must be the SPLASH effect catching my attention. I still need to read The Jekyll Revelation. I think the cover is dreary and drab, but I hope it works for the book.

    1. Kristen Burns

I’ve always liked it too. And yes, I’m glad I’m not the only one who likes that splash effect! I do recall you getting the Jekyll Revelation since I had considered it myself and am curious to see what you think of it.

Well, I would never have thought you could have found so many covers with Big Ben on. I suppose it makes sense in establishing the geography of the book – like putting the Eiffel Tower on the cover, or the Statue of Liberty.
You’re right about Incarnation – that is one awesome cover but I like the Ruby Red Trilogy too (though I would have been looking at those dresses rather than the clock if you hadn’t mentioned it lol)
PS If you’ve never visited London or Big Ben, you haven’t missed anything at all.

    1. Kristen Burns

Right? But that’s a good point, it does establish the setting really well, although I can’t say I’ve seen nearly as many books with the Statue of Liberty (that’s the topic in a couple weeks, and I don’t know of any books, so I probably won’t be joining lol).

Lol, I do like those dresses! And haha, I thought you were going to tell me I was missing out, but that’s good to know since I’ll probably never make it there.

I once read a dutch book named Lucidas with the most pretty blue cover with the big ben on it. That’s the first cover that comes to mind. I think I’ve even seen the big ben in real life once as I visited London one time.

That Ruby red series has such pretty cover with the big ben in the background and the pretty dresses. Makes me want to pick up the series just for the covers. the supernatural Freak series looks good too. But I read the blurb and it didn’t quite grab my attention, but the covers are pretty.

that peter pan cover reminds me of one of my favorite games Kingdom Hearts where in the peter pan level there was a boss battle in front of the big ben.

The carnival keepers cover really has that splash feel, that’s the best way to describe that cover. And I can see why the Incarnation cover is your favorite, it’s a great cover and I like her outfit as well and the color contrast of red and blue.

    1. Kristen Burns

I tried to find Lucidas online to see the cover but couldn’t find it :-/

The Ruby covers are so pretty! The Supernatural Freak blurb did get my attention which was why I read it (it had a different cover before, although that one was pretty too), but it wasn’t quite for me.

I’m glad people agree with my description of The Carnival Keepers cover lol. But the Incarnation one just works so well!

  5. Bookworm Brandee

There are lots of nice covers here, Kristen. I’m particularly fond of Gier’s covers as well as Cornwall’s. And the guy on the cover of The Heartless City? He sorta looks like the guy from Fantastic Beasts! šŸ˜‰

Sorry for the comment bombing you’re about to receive…I’m catching up now that my oldest went back to college. šŸ™‚ Happy Monday!

I actually quite like all of these! I am a big fan of clocks, though, so that’s probably why, haha. I think you did a pretty great job in picking your favourite – it is absolutely lovely. I also really like the cover of Inconceivable, although I wish the title font was a bit prettier, because then it would be one of the most gorgeous covers EVER. The colours, the newspaper print and the silhouettes are just so pretty.

The cover of Timekeeper by Tara Sim doesn’t feature Big Ben, but it has a clock face on it and I love it šŸ˜€

    1. Kristen Burns

I like them all too! I’ve also always found clocks interesting. The cover of Inconceivable is definitely gorgeous. I guess maybe they were worried that using a script or fancy font would clash too much with all the other stuff?

You’re right, the Timekeeper cover is so pretty!

  7. Ashley G.

Big Ben! What a neat idea! It kinda makes me think of Sherlock. That’s probably why I like it. XD

I like the Heartless City one. But my favorite is definitely The Jekyll Revelation. Like you said, it’s sets a tone. It looks very intriguing. I even like the title too. It makes me want to read it.

    1. Kristen Burns

Actually I almost used the Paper Rock Books version of the Sherlock cover lol. The Jekyll Revelation one really does set a tone, and I agree, it sounds interesting.

  8. chucklesthescot

I’ve been to London and I was surprised by how small Big Ben actually is! It looks bigger on TV! Some really great covers there for Louisa Klein, Kerstin Gier, Emma Cornwall. Nice!

  9. Laura

Wow, I had no idea there were so many books with Big Ben on the cover! These are really cool! šŸ™‚
I especially love the one for Inconceivable. I like that collage-look – it’a definitely something you don’t see often on a book cover, and it looks really quirky! šŸ™‚

  10. verushka

When I saw the title of this post, the first thing I thought was: are there really that many books with Big Ben on the cover? Stupid question! These all look lovely, but Inconceivable grabbed my attention. The collage effect is quite striking!

  11. Sandra @YouMaySayImaReader

There’s a shitload of covers featuring the Big Ben! My God! Lol.

My favorites are: Inconceivable by Tegan Wren, The Jekyll Revelation by Robert Masello, The Heartless City by Andrea Berthot and The Carnival Keepers by Amber Gulley (I totally get the SPLASH thing).

    Really good selection šŸ™‚

    1. Kristen Burns

There really are! I wasn’t expecting there to be so many lol.

I’m glad everyone understands the splash thing I was saying, haha. And I love all those too!

      Thanks šŸ™‚

I never realized how many books have Big Ben. Interesting. Personally I prefer the German covers for the Ruby Red trilogy. But they don’t have Big Ben which is a bit of a shame really.

  13. Becky @ A Fool's Ingenuity

Huh, I honestly thought covers featuring Big Ben would be few and far between. Turns out I know very little and need to go reexamine a few of those covers I’ve read lately. I mean, you expect to see it on Peter Pan, but some of these other books has me taking a second look. I’m liking the cover for The Heartless City and Inconceivable, I’m loving the collage-y newspaper look.

  14. Dragonfly

Seriously K WHERE do u get such gorgeous covers!!! Do you like have an app or something???? I WANAAAA KNOW! Spill it! All of them are gorgeous but Splash is awesomener!

    1. Kristen Burns

I’LL NEVER REVEAL MY SECRETS. Actually I totally revealed my secret right in the intro lol. I just pay attention to covers and bookmark any I find that are pretty and have something on them that is either an upcoming topic or that I think I could make a topic out of. Eventually I end up with a whole list and voila!

      1. Dragonfly

Are you trying to confuse me MORE? ? Where do you find the covers to pay attention to and bookmark them in the first place??? WHAT do you want? Chocolate? Wine ? Books? Huh??? What? ?

        1. Kristen Burns

I don’t know, don’t you ever, like, just browse around Amazon or Goodreads? I also sometimes find them on my GR feed or on other blogs. I’ve just started noticing things on covers more ever since I started doing this meme lol.
